Artemis II Heads to Moon After Key Engine Burn

The crew of NASA’s Artemis II mission has successfully begun its journey toward the Moon after completing a critical engine burn that pushed their spacecraft beyond Earth’s orbit. The Orion capsule fired its main engine for nearly six minutes in a maneuver known as translunar injection (TLI). According to NASA officials, the operation was executed without issues, marking a major milestone in the mission. With this step completed, Artemis II is now following a looping trajectory that will take the astronauts around the far side of the Moon before returning to Earth. This mission represents the first time since 1972 that humans have traveled beyond Earth’s orbit. From aboard the spacecraft, Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen described the crew’s condition as positive, noting they were “feeling pretty good” as they head toward the Moon. He also highlighted the collective effort behind […]

US updates visa rules, adds 12 new bond countries

The United States has updated its visa rules by adding 12 more countries to its visa bond programme, which requires some applicants to pay a refundable bond of up to 15000 dollars before receiving certain visas. The policy mainly targets countries with high rates of visa overstays and is aimed at encouraging travellers to leave the US on time. Under the expanded scheme, qualified applicants from the newly listed countries must deposit the bond as an additional condition for securing mainly B1 and B2 visitor visas, covering business and tourism. The money is returned if the holder leaves the US on or before the expiry of their authorised stay or if they later decide not to travel. The 12 countries newly added to the active visa bond list are Cambodia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Grenada, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mongolia, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Papua New […]

Islamic states slam Israel’s new death penalty law

Several Islamic states have strongly condemned Israel’s new death penalty law, which targets Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks on Israelis in the occupied territories. They describe the measure as discriminatory, dangerous and a serious threat to regional stability and peace. Under the law, Palestinians in the West Bank who are convicted by Israeli military courts of carrying out lethal attacks classified as acts of terrorism will face death by hanging as the default sentence. Rights groups say the same punishment does not automatically apply to Jewish Israelis convicted of killing Palestinians, making the law clearly unequal and racist in its application. In a joint statement, a group of Muslim majority countries, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, condemned the law as a dangerous escalation. They warned that the legislation could inflame tensions, […]

Greece train disaster trial sparks anger

Relatives of the victims of the Tempi train disaster gathered in court on Wednesday, calling for accountability and justice three years after Greece’s deadliest railway accident. The hearing, held in Larisa, had already been delayed once due to disorganisation during its initial opening. As proceedings resumed, many families once again struggled to gain access to the courtroom, with entry restricted to officially registered participants. Several relatives expressed frustration over limited seating, noting that police occupied multiple rows while families were left unable to properly follow the trial. Defence lawyer Zoe Konstantopoulou called for the sessions to be recorded to ensure transparency, given the restricted access. The tragedy, which occurred in February 2023, involved a passenger train traveling from Athens to Thessaloniki that collided head-on with a freight train near Tempi. Most of the 57 victims were students. Some are believed […]

‘No Negotiations’ – Iran Says It Has Not Responded To US Plan

Iran has denied that it is holding negotiations with the United States over a plan to end the ongoing war, insisting that Tehran has not yet replied to a reported US peace proposal. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a televised interview that while Iran receives messages from Washington directly and through regional intermediaries, these do not amount to talks. US officials have circulated a 15 point plan, passed to Tehran by Pakistan and other intermediaries, setting out proposals to halt hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Some media outlets had reported that Iran responded with its own counterproposal, but Araghchi dismissed these accounts as mere guesses and said no formal answer has been sent. He stressed that there are currently no grounds for negotiations with Washington, declaring that Iran does not intend to negotiate and will continue its […]
