Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have arrived in Australia for a four-day visit that blends charitable engagements with private, revenue-generating appearances.
The couple, who stepped back from official royal duties in 2020, are travelling in a personal capacity. Their itinerary includes visits to healthcare centres, meetings with military veterans, and support activities for survivors of domestic violence.
They began their tour in Melbourne, where they visited the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne. There, they met young patients and their families, interacting closely through conversations, photos, and a therapeutic garden session.
Charity and commercial activities combined
Alongside humanitarian engagements, the visit also includes paid appearances. Prince Harry is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech at a leadership summit in Melbourne, where ticket prices range up to A$2,400. Some proceeds from the event are expected to support the charity Lifeline.
Meanwhile, Meghan will participate in a private session at a women-only wellness retreat in Sydney. The event, marketed as a “girls’ weekend,” offers packages costing up to A$3,199, including opportunities for group photos with the duchess.
The exact fees the couple may receive for these appearances have not been disclosed.
Private visit with limited public access
Unlike their 2018 royal tour, which drew large crowds, this trip does not include public meet-and-greet events. Their team says this decision is intended to minimise disruption while focusing on partner organisations.
After Melbourne, the couple will travel to Canberra and Sydney. During their stay, they are also expected to engage with veterans at the Australian National Veterans Arts Museum and participate in community-focused activities.
Security and funding questions
As private visitors, the Sussexes have stated that their trip is self-funded. However, questions remain about whether Australian public funds are being used for security operations.
Authorities in Victoria and New South Wales have confirmed that police will provide security support but have not clarified funding arrangements. Officials say measures are in place to ensure public safety while limiting disruption.
Broader interests in Australia
There are also indications that Australia could become a strategic market for Meghan’s lifestyle brand, As Ever. The brand has reportedly secured trademarks across multiple product categories in the country, suggesting potential business expansion.
The visit comes at a sensitive time for Prince Harry, following recent legal developments involving Sentebale, the African charity he co-founded.
Despite the mix of charitable outreach and commercial activity, the trip highlights the couple’s evolving public role—balancing philanthropy with private enterprise since stepping away from royal responsibilities.
