Former Kano State governor Ibrahim Shekarau has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, in a move widely seen as paving the way for his return to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
His decision followed days of consultations with members of his Shura committee, his core political support group. In a formal letter dated April 19 and addressed to the PDP chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Shekarau notified the party of his exit, with copies sent to the Kano State PDP chairman and the Nassarawa LGA chairman.
“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party with effect from today,” he wrote, adding that the decision came after wide and extensive deliberations within his political group on pursuing their ambitions in another party.
He stressed that the move was a collective resolution rather than a personal step. Shekarau also thanked the ward leadership for their support over the years and prayed for continued divine guidance in their stewardship.
His resignation comes just days after APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda publicly invited Shekarau and fellow PDP chieftain Bello Hayatu to join the ruling party. APC posters were seen displayed around Shekarau’s Mundubawa Avenue residence in Kano, reinforcing speculation that he is set to formally rejoin the APC.
Shekarau, a founding member of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party under which he governed Kano for two terms between 2003 and 2011, has moved across several political platforms over the course of his career.
His latest defection delivers another blow to the PDP, which has been losing prominent figures at an increasing rate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
