Chad deports Nigerians fleeing jihadist violence

Chad has arrested and deported hundreds of Nigerians who fled jihadist violence in the Lake Chad region and sought safety in its territory, Nigerian and humanitarian sources say. Many of those affected are from states in northern Nigeria that have endured years of attacks by Boko Haram and other armed groups. According to Nigerian officials in Borno State, the Chadian authorities recently rounded up irregular Nigerian migrants in several towns and transported them to the border for return to Nigeria. Local sources say some of those detained had lived in Chad for years after fleeing earlier waves of insurgent attacks and had been surviving through informal work and begging. Humanitarian agencies report that thousands of Nigerians remain displaced around the Lake Chad Basin because of ongoing insecurity and repeated attacks by jihadist groups. Many crossed into neighbouring Chad, Niger and […]

Eight children missing after orphanage attack in Kogi

Eight children remain missing after an armed attack on an orphanage in Kogi State, in north-central Nigeria, authorities have confirmed. According to the state’s information commissioner, Kingsley Fanwo, gunmen stormed the unregistered facility on Sunday and abducted 23 children along with the orphanage’s owner. Security forces were able to rescue 15 of the children following what officials described as a rapid and coordinated response. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, security sources indicate the presence of a cell linked to Boko Haram in the area, which has experienced repeated incidents of violence. The commissioner noted that the orphanage was operating without official authorization and was located in a remote area, outside the oversight of relevant authorities. He called on operators of similar institutions to ensure proper registration and coordination with government agencies, particularly given the current security […]

Togo’s Happiness: Media Portrayal vs. Reality

ECOWAS urges restraint as Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone border tensions rise

The Economic Community of West African States has appealed for calm and restraint from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone following renewed tensions and reported armed incidents along their shared borders. Recent reports say Guinean soldiers allegedly crossed into Liberian territory in Foya District, Lofa County, firing sporadic gunshots and briefly hoisting their national flag on Liberian soil, weeks after a similar confrontation near the Sierra Leonean border in which several Sierra Leonean security personnel were detained. The incidents have sparked fears of escalation in the Mano River Union region. In its response, ECOWAS called on all three governments to exercise maximum restraint, avoid inflammatory statements and resolve outstanding boundary issues through dialogue and existing regional mechanisms. The bloc reiterated that only a comprehensive regional approach can restore lasting security along the Guinea–Liberia–Sierra Leone frontier. The organisation also expressed support for […]

Urgent Call for Justice in Togo

The people of Togo have endured over six decades under a regime passed from father to son, where liberty is stifled and dissent punished. For too long, their voices have been silenced, their elections manipulated, and their basic rights denied. Yet the world has often remained silent, even as similar crises elsewhere have drawn swift international intervention. The principle of equity demands that what is deemed just in one nation should apply equally in another. The world has acted in Kosovo, Libya, and against regimes in Russia, North Korea, and Iran. Why, then, should Togo’s suffering be overlooked? To ignore it is to undermine the very foundations of international law and the ideals enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Human dignity knows no borders, and those endowed with power bear a responsibility to protect it everywhere. Every day […]

Ghana to import fuel from Dangote refinery

The Government of Ghana has pledged to start importing petroleum products from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos, Nigeria, as part of plans to strengthen energy security and cut costs. Ghana’s Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, gave the assurance during a visit to the 650,000 barrels per day refinery, where he inspected facilities and held talks with the management team. He said Accra is committed to making the refinery a key source of fuel supply once commercial terms are finalised. Prempeh noted that buying refined products from Nigeria is expected to be cheaper than relying on distant imports from Europe. He added that shorter shipping distances and regional cooperation should help reduce freight charges and ease pressure on Ghana’s foreign reserves. Officials in both countries say the move will deepen economic ties between Ghana and Nigeria and support West Africa’s […]

Experts cast doubt over ‘foiled coup’ on Burkina Faso’s Traore

Burkina Faso’s military government says it recently foiled an assassination plot and coup attempt against junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traore, allegedly planned for early January and involving a plan to kill him and seize key state institutions. Security Minister Mahamadou Sana accused former transitional president Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba of masterminding the operation, claiming it was uncovered “in the final hours” by intelligence services. State media went on to broadcast days of televised “confessions” by alleged plotters, with authorities describing the incident as yet another attempt by “enemies” to destabilise the country. But regional analysts and Burkinabe observers say these repeated announcements of foiled coups are becoming harder to believe, given the lack of independently verifiable evidence and the increasingly dramatic official narratives. Some experts warn that the junta’s frequent claims of plots and assassination attempts risk looking like a strategy […]

Doumbouya wins Guinea presidency in disputed vote

Guinea’s junta leader Mamady Doumbouya has been declared winner of the presidential election, securing a sweeping first round victory four years after seizing power in a coup. He had earlier promised not to run and to return the country to civilian rule by the end of 2024. Election officials said Doumbouya, 41, won 86.72 percent of the vote, far above the threshold that would have required a runoff. Turnout was put at 80.95 percent, with results showing him taking more than 80 percent of ballots in many districts of the capital Conakry and several other regions. His candidacy was enabled by a new constitution approved in a September referendum, which allowed junta members to contest elections. The charter also extended presidential terms from five to seven years, renewable once. Key opposition figures were barred from running under the new rules. […]

ECOWAS Leaders Reaffirm Vow To Defend Democracy Amid Coups

Heads of state and government of the Economic Community of West African States have pledged to stand firm against unconstitutional changes of government and protect democracy across the sub region. Meeting against the backdrop of recent coup attempts, they stressed that military takeovers remain unacceptable under ECOWAS protocols. Leaders used the occasion to restate their “zero tolerance” stance on coups, warning that sanctions, diplomatic pressure and, where necessary, regional security measures will be considered to deter would be putschists. They also highlighted the recent failed coup in Benin Republic as proof of their determination to prevent a further rollback of democratic rule. Beyond security, ECOWAS leaders emphasised plans to deepen economic integration, including freer movement of people and goods, stronger trade ties and shared infrastructure projects. They argued that a more stable, integrated regional economy will support democracy by creating […]
