Explosions and heavy gunfire have been reported in Bamako as armed groups launched coordinated attacks across Mali.
The military confirmed that fighting was ongoing, stating that defence and security forces were actively responding to the assaults. Witnesses reported intense gunfire and blasts around Kati, which hosts a key military base. Roads in the area were quickly sealed off by security forces.
Attacks were also reported in northern cities such as Gao and Kidal, as well as Sévaré. Analysts describe the offensive as one of the most significant in recent years.
Initial reports suggest that different armed groups may be involved. The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), which seeks independence for northern Mali, is believed to have focused on northern targets. Meanwhile, the jihadist group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) is suspected of carrying out simultaneous attacks in multiple locations.
Although authorities say the situation is under control, sporadic gunfire has continued in parts of the capital. Security checkpoints have been set up, particularly on routes leading to the airport, and reports indicate that flights were temporarily suspended.
International reactions have been swift. The African Union condemned the violence, warning of risks to civilians, while the US State Department expressed solidarity with the Malian people. Foreign missions have advised their citizens to remain indoors.
A spokesperson for the FLA claimed its fighters had taken control of Kidal and expanded operations in Gao, though these claims have not been independently verified.
Mali remains under military rule led by Assimi Goïta, who came to power after coups in 2020 and 2021. Despite efforts to restore security, the country continues to face persistent threats from jihadist groups and separatist movements, with large areas beyond full government control.

Palestinians vote in rare Gaza local elections
Palestinians voted in local elections on Saturday across the West Bank and in parts of the Gaza Strip, marking the first vote of any kind in Gaza since 2006. Polling took place in several locations, including Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, an area less affected by recent conflict. More than one million voters were eligible, according to the Central Elections Commission, with around 70,000 registered in Deir al-Balah alone. Results were expected later in the weekend. The vote was held without participation from Hamas, which was barred from running. Several other factions also boycotted the elections due to a requirement that candidates recognise the authority of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO). The PLO is dominated by Fatah, led by President Mahmoud Abbas, which currently governs parts of the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority. With major opposition groups absent, Fatah […]

Mexico: US agents lacked approval for operation
The Mexico has said that two US agents who died in a car crash last weekend were not authorised to carry out operations on its territory. According to officials, the agents—reported to be linked to the CIA—had taken part in a raid targeting suspected drug laboratories in the northern state of Chihuahua. Their vehicle later veered off a mountain road and exploded. Following an investigation ordered by President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s security ministry stated that neither agent had formal accreditation to participate in operational activities. It also confirmed that federal authorities had not been informed of their presence. Immigration records showed that one of the agents entered the country as a visitor, while the other travelled on a diplomatic passport. Mexican law prohibits foreign agents from engaging in operations without prior government approval. The crash, which occurred on 19 April, […]

Deadly Russian strikes hit multiple Ukraine cities
At least seven people have been killed in overnight Russian strikes across Ukraine, including five in the central city of Dnipro, where an apartment building was hit, according to local officials. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the assault lasted “practically all night,” with emergency teams still searching for survivors beneath the rubble on Saturday morning. During the attack, British fighter jets were scrambled from Romania after Russian drones were detected near the border. However, the UK Ministry of Defence denied reports that the aircraft had shot any down. At the same time, Ukrainian forces carried out long-range drone strikes deep inside Russia. In Yekaterinburg, nearly 1,600 km from the Ukrainian border, six people were injured after a building was struck. In nearby Chelyabinsk, authorities said drones targeting an industrial site were intercepted. Other Ukrainian cities, including Chernihiv, Odesa and Kharkiv, were […]

Israel, Lebanon extend ceasefire as Iran peace talks stall
Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend their fragile ceasefire by three weeks even as U.S. efforts to secure a broader peace deal with Iran remain stuck. President Donald Trump announced the extension in Washington on Thursday after meeting the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors, saying he believed “there’s a very good chance of having peace” and calling it “an easy one” to achieve, despite recent Israeli strikes in Lebanon and renewed rocket fire from Iran backed Hezbollah. The initial truce between Israel and Lebanon had been due to expire on Sunday. At the same time, Trump signalled he is in no hurry to end the wider war with Iran, warning that “the clock is ticking” for Tehran as a third U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, arrived in the Middle East to join two other carriers already operating […]

US boards tanker in Iran oil blockade push
The US Department of Defense has confirmed that American forces boarded a tanker suspected of carrying Iranian oil in the Indian Ocean, marking the latest escalation in Washington’s naval campaign against Tehran. According to officials, the operation targeted the vessel M/T Majestic X and was conducted as part of a “maritime interdiction” — a naval procedure used to inspect or seize ships believed to be violating international sanctions or supporting hostile activities. This move follows a broader maritime blockade imposed by the United States on 13 April, aimed at restricting traffic to and from Iranian ports. Since then, United States Central Command says dozens of vessels have been ordered to turn back, as enforcement efforts intensify across key shipping routes. Tensions have risen further after Donald Trump instructed the US Navy to take direct action against any boats suspected of […]

Russia faces backlash over internet curbs
Near the Kremlin, dozens of people recently gathered outside the presidential administration building to submit petitions urging authorities to ease restrictions on internet access. While such actions are legal in Russia, they carry risks in a climate of increasing control over digital space. In recent weeks, Russian authorities have tightened oversight of the internet. Access to global messaging platforms has been restricted, and mobile internet disruptions—including temporary shutdowns—have been reported in several regions. Officials say these measures are necessary for security purposes, particularly to prevent potential attacks. The atmosphere around these petitions is tense. Participants acknowledge the risks involved, with reports of security personnel monitoring and filming those taking part. Despite this, many say they feel compelled to speak out. For citizens and businesses alike, the impact is tangible. Entrepreneurs note that restrictions on platforms such as Telegram and WhatsApp […]

US soldier charged over Maduro insider betting
A US special forces soldier has been arrested after allegedly using classified military information to profit from bets placed before the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro became public. According to the US Department of Justice, the soldier, identified as Gannon Ken Van Dyke, is accused of placing a series of trades on a prediction platform while directly involved in planning the operation that led to Maduro’s arrest in January. Prosecutors say he used sensitive, nonpublic information to anticipate the outcome and timing of the mission. Investigators allege that Van Dyke created an account in late December 2025 and placed multiple transactions linked to political developments in Venezuela. In total, he reportedly invested more than $33,000 and generated profits exceeding $400,000 once the operation was carried out. The military operation, carried out overnight on 3 January, resulted in Maduro and […]
