Lindsey Vonn crashes in Olympic downhill after injury

American skiing legend Lindsey Vonn crashed during the women’s downhill race at the Winter Olympics, just nine days after suffering a serious ligament injury to her left knee. The 41-year-old had completed two solid training runs on the famous Olimpia delle Tofane course in Cortina, but her race ended abruptly after she lost control early in her descent. Medical staff attended to her for an extended period on the slope before she was airlifted off the piste by helicopter. Vonn’s decision to compete had already been viewed as a major gamble. She had ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in Switzerland during the final World Cup event before the Games. Despite the injury, she chose to race, insisting these Olympics would be the final chapter of her career. Spectators watched in silence before applauding as the helicopter carried her away […]

Thailand votes amid deep divide between reformists and conservatives

Thailand has voted in an early general election triggered by the collapse of successive coalition governments, a cycle of instability that has produced three prime ministers in just three years. As in the 2023 election, the contest has largely centred on a familiar divide: reformists calling for sweeping political change versus conservative forces determined to preserve the existing power structure. On one side is the People’s Party, which has led opinion polls and advocates deep reforms. On the other is incumbent Prime Minister Anutin Charnavirakul, heading the conservative Bhumjaithai (“Thai Pride”) Party. Polling stations closed nationwide on Sunday, with official results expected around 22:00 local time (15:00 GMT). No single party is expected to secure an outright parliamentary majority. Reformists versus the establishment The key question looming over the election is whether the People’s Party can translate its popularity into […]

Exit polls point to strong win for Japan’s LDP

Voting has concluded in Japan’s snap general election called by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, with exit polls indicating a clear victory for her Liberal Democrat Party (LDP). The outcome would give Japan’s first female prime minister a strong public mandate just four months after she assumed leadership of the party. This projected win marks a sharp turnaround for the LDP, which had suffered heavy losses under Takaichi’s two immediate predecessors amid corruption scandals and rising living costs that eroded public trust. Despite losing its parliamentary majority and seeing its long-standing coalition with Komeito collapse, the party appears to have regained voter confidence under her leadership. According to projections by public broadcaster NHK, the LDP is on course to secure 274 of the 328 seats in the House of Representatives. Takaichi’s personal approval ratings, which have consistently remained above 70%, are […]

France probes ex-minister Jack Lang over Epstein links

French financial crime prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation into former Culture Minister Jack Lang over his alleged financial links to Jeffrey Epstein, judicial sources confirmed. The inquiry focuses on suspicions of “laundering the proceeds of tax fraud”. It follows the recent release of documents by the US Department of Justice related to the Epstein case, which detail contacts between members of the Lang family and the late American financier. Jack Lang, 86, a prominent figure in Socialist governments from the 1980s to the early 2000s, has firmly denied any wrongdoing. Speaking to AFP on Saturday, he described the accusations as “baseless” and said the investigation would help “clarify the facts and restore my honour”. Shortly after news of the inquiry became public, Lang announced that he was ready to step down as president of the Arab World Institute, an […]

US targets June deadline to end Ukraine war

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has said the United States is seeking to bring the war with Russia to an end by June, revealing that Washington has invited both Kyiv and Moscow to participate in talks on US soil next week. According to Zelensky, the proposal marks the first time the US has suggested direct negotiations between Ukrainian and Russian delegations in America. The talks are expected to take place in Miami, and Ukraine has already agreed to attend. At the time of reporting, neither Washington nor Moscow had publicly commented on the proposal. Since returning to office more than a year ago, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to end the conflict. Zelensky’s remarks come as diplomatic efforts continue alongside ongoing fighting on the ground. The Ukrainian leader was speaking after the conclusion of a second round […]
