Chernobyl Wedding Amid Nuclear Disaster

A quiet wedding night in April 1986 turned into a life-altering moment for a young couple living near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, as one of the worst disasters in history unfolded just a few kilometres away. Iryna Stetsenko had just finished preparing for her wedding and was trying to sleep when unusual vibrations and noises filled the air. Nearby, her fiancé Serhiy Lobanov slept through what he initially thought might be a minor earthquake. Neither realized that reactor number four at the Chernobyl plant had exploded, releasing massive amounts of radioactive material. The following morning, despite visible signs of disruption—soldiers in gas masks, streets being washed, and smoke rising from the plant—authorities provided little information. Life appeared to continue as normal, and the couple proceeded with their wedding as planned. However, the atmosphere was tense. Guests sensed that something […]

Australian soldier denies war crime charges

Ben Roberts-Smith, widely regarded as Australia’s most decorated living soldier, has publicly denied all allegations against him after being charged with multiple war crimes. In his first statement since the charges were filed, the former member of the Special Air Service Regiment said he remains “proud of my service in Afghanistan” and is determined to clear his name. The 47-year-old faces five charges related to alleged murders of unarmed Afghan detainees between 2009 and 2012. Roberts-Smith was arrested at Sydney Airport on 7 April and later released on bail. He described the arrest as a “sensational” and “unnecessary spectacle,” declining to take questions from the media. He added that although he did not want the charges to be brought, he would use the legal process as an opportunity to prove his innocence. Prosecutors allege that he was directly involved in […]

Police in London are investigating suspicious items found in Kensington Gardens after a video circulated online claiming a drone attack on the nearby Embassy of Israel in London. The Metropolitan Police said the embassy had not been targeted and that there is currently no indication of an increased risk to public safety. However, officers are examining several discarded items in the park while working to verify the authenticity of the video. A significant police presence has been deployed, with parts of the park sealed off and scheduled to remain closed throughout Friday. Specialist units, including chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear response teams, have been seen at the scene alongside forensic officers and divers searching areas such as the Round Pond. Mugabe’s son pleads guilty in SA shooting case

The youngest son of Zimbabwe’s former president Robert Mugabe has pleaded guilty to firearm-related and immigration offences in South Africa. Bellarmine Mugabe, 28, admitted to pointing a firearm and being in the country illegally during a court appearance in Alexandra, Johannesburg. He was arrested in February after a shooting incident at his residence in the upscale suburb of Hyde Park. Mugabe has been in custody alongside his co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze, who pleaded guilty to more serious charges including attempted murder, illegal possession of ammunition, defeating the ends of justice, and immigration violations. Prosecutors initially charged Mugabe with attempted murder, but those charges were later dropped after Matonhodze admitted to firing the gun. According to South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority, it was not immediately clear at the time of arrest who had pulled the trigger. The incident occurred on 19 February, […]

Oil prices fall as Strait of Hormuz reopens

Oil prices dropped sharply after Strait of Hormuz was declared open to commercial shipping by Iran for the remainder of the ceasefire period, easing concerns over global energy supply disruptions. The price of Brent crude fell to around $88 per barrel, down from over $98 earlier in the day. The strategic waterway, which connects the Gulf to the Arabian Sea, typically handles about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, making it a critical artery for global energy markets. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, confirmed that all commercial vessels would be allowed to pass freely during the ceasefire. The announcement helped calm markets that had been unsettled by weeks of disruption. Global financial markets reacted positively. In the United States, the S&P 500 rose by 0.8%, while both the Nasdaq Composite and the Dow Jones Industrial Average […]
