UCL: Lookman’s strike seals Atlético semi-final spot over Barcelona

Nigeria international Ademola Lookman scored the decisive goal that sent Atlético Madrid into the UEFA Champions League semi-finals at the expense of Barcelona. Despite losing 2–1 on the night at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Diego Simeone’s side advanced 3–2 on aggregate thanks to their 2–0 first-leg victory at Camp Nou. Barcelona made a fast start in the second leg, with Lamine Yamal opening the scoring in the fourth minute before Ferran Torres struck soon after to level the tie on aggregate and put pressure on Atlético. However, moments after play resumed following an injury to Fermín López, Atlético hit back on the counter, and Lookman calmly finished a low cross from Marcos Llorente in the 31st minute to restore the Spaniards’ aggregate lead. Refereeing v Atletico ‘a robbery’ – Barca’s Raphinha

Barcelona forward Raphinha has branded the refereeing in their Champions League quarter-final defeat to Atletico Madrid “a robbery.” Barca exited 3–2 on aggregate despite a 2–1 win in Tuesday’s second leg, having lost the first leg 2–0 at home. In both matches a Barcelona defender was sent off after a yellow card was upgraded to red when the referee, on VAR advice, reviewed a potential denial of a goalscoring opportunity on the pitchside monitor. Pau Cubarsi was dismissed by Istvan Kovacs in the first leg, while fellow defender Eric Garcia was sent off by French referee Clement Turpin in the second. Kovacs and video assistant referee Christian Dingert were also criticised by Barcelona after they allowed play to continue when Atletico defender Marc Pubill handled the ball in his own penalty area from what appeared to be a goal-kick situation. An old social media post by former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola praising President Bola Tinubu’s leadership has resurfaced online following his recent description of the current administration as a “government of scammers.” The 2017 tweet, now widely shared on X, showed Aregbesola crediting Tinubu for shaping his political career, saying: “Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership and the opportunity to work with him to take Lagos forward was a huge factor in making me who I am today.” The renewed attention came after Aregbesola, now national secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), criticised the Tinubu administration while addressing delegates at the party’s national convention. Speaking at the event, he attacked the “Renewed Hope” agenda and urged Nigerians to stop the ruling party from retaining power in 2027. “Four years ago, this government promised Nigerians renewed hope for a better […]

Edun urges developing nations to act early against global shocks

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has urged developing countries to take early, proactive steps to shield their economies from global shocks, warning that poor policy choices could derail reforms and worsen inflation. Speaking at a G24 news conference on the sidelines of the IMF meetings in Washington, D.C., Edun said today’s uncertain global environment demands careful, balanced decisions, especially in vulnerable developing economies. He cautioned that raising interest rates too quickly could undermine ongoing reforms, while delayed action could allow inflation to spiral. He noted that central banks in developing countries face tough choices as they navigate energy crises, geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions that are driving up the cost of fuel, fertiliser and food. While oil‑exporting nations may benefit from higher prices, he stressed that both oil producers and importers are battling […]
