More criticism trails Makinde over Wetie comment

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is facing growing criticism over his recent reference to Operation Wetie, a violent episode in the political history of the old Western Region. The governor reportedly used the expression during a political gathering in Ibadan at the weekend, a remark that many now see as irresponsible and dangerous. Opposition figures, civil society groups and concerned citizens have condemned the statement, warning that such language could encourage political thuggery and undermine peace in the state. They argue that referencing a period associated with arson, killings and severe unrest sends the wrong signal ahead of the 2027 election cycle. Some critics insist that leaders must promote calm and constructive engagement instead of inflammatory rhetoric. They stress that Oyo State has enjoyed relative stability in recent years and should not return to a climate of fear or politically motivated attacks. Political […]

Hezbollah leader rejects Lebanon–Israel direct talks

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has rejected Lebanon’s planned direct negotiations with Israel, branding them a “grave sin” that will destabilise the country. His remarks come after Lebanon and Israel’s US ambassadors held two rare meetings in Washington in recent weeks, the first such encounters in decades. The initial meeting helped secure a truce in the ongoing Israel–Hezbollah war, and Beirut has been preparing for direct talks aimed at reaching a peace deal with Israel, a country it has officially been at war with since 1948. “We categorically reject direct negotiations with Israel, and those in power should know that their actions will not benefit Lebanon or themselves,” Qassem said in a statement broadcast on Hezbollah’s Al‑Manar TV channel. He urged authorities to “back down from their grave sin that is putting Lebanon in a spiral of instability,” accusing the government […]

However, the youngster was unable to complete the game and had to be substituted shortly before the hour mark, making way for Johnny Cardoso. The club later confirmed that Barrios felt muscular discomfort in his left thigh, with further medical tests scheduled to determine the extent of the problem. Osimhen cleared to face Fenerbahçe in title defining Istanbul derby

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has been cleared to play in Sunday’s high stakes Istanbul derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe after concerns over his protective arm brace were dismissed by Turkish football authorities. Osimhen featured in Galatasaray’s midweek defeat to Gençlerbirliği wearing the brace, which he has been using for protection following a recent arm injury. Fenerbahçe subsequently lodged an official complaint with the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), arguing that the gear could pose a danger to opposing players. After reviewing the case, the federation rejected Fenerbahçe’s protest and confirmed that the brace had been medically approved. Officials said all necessary consultations were carried out before Osimhen was authorised to use the support in competitive matches. Fenerbahçe’s unease is understood to be tied to the importance of the derby in the tight Super Lig title race. Galatasaray currently hold a […]

Mali: Fresh clashes erupt between Tuareg rebels, government forces in Kidal

Fresh fighting has broken out in the strategic northern Malian city of Kidal between Tuareg rebels and government forces backed by Russian mercenaries. Tuareg rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) said clashes resumed on Sunday as they tried to “drive out the last Russian fighters” who had taken refuge in a military camp in the city. A local elected official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that residents heard sustained gunfire as Malian troops, Russian personnel and Tuareg fighters exchanged shots. Kidal, a historic Tuareg stronghold, was retaken by the Malian army in November 2023 with support from Russia’s Wagner paramilitary group, ending more than a decade of de facto rebel control. The FLA now claims to have seized the city again and says it has also captured positions in the northern Gao region. The renewed clashes follow a […]
