Fresh fighting has broken out in the strategic northern Malian city of Kidal between Tuareg rebels and government forces backed by Russian mercenaries.
Tuareg rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) said clashes resumed on Sunday as they tried to “drive out the last Russian fighters” who had taken refuge in a military camp in the city. A local elected official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that residents heard sustained gunfire as Malian troops, Russian personnel and Tuareg fighters exchanged shots.
Kidal, a historic Tuareg stronghold, was retaken by the Malian army in November 2023 with support from Russia’s Wagner paramilitary group, ending more than a decade of de facto rebel control. The FLA now claims to have seized the city again and says it has also captured positions in the northern Gao region.
The renewed clashes follow a wave of coordinated attacks on Saturday across junta‑ruled Mali, when an Al Qaeda linked jihadist group teamed up with Tuareg rebels to strike army targets near the capital Bamako and in several other towns. Authorities said 16 civilians and soldiers were wounded and that the attacks caused “limited material damage,” insisting the situation was “totally under control” in all affected locations.
Mali has been mired in conflict and jihadist violence for more than a decade, but observers say the latest attacks are the worst since the military seized power in a 2020 coup.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the violence and voiced deep concern over the reports of attacks in multiple locations. His spokesman Stephane Dujarric called for coordinated international support to confront the evolving threat of violent extremism and terrorism in the Sahel and to address urgent humanitarian needs.

Popular Nollywood special effects artist Onilogbo Hakeem, widely known as Hakeem Effect, has revealed that he first learned his craft through a series of vivid dreams. Hakeem, regarded as one of the industry’s leading prosthetics and special effects creators, said the journey began when a mysterious tall, white figure appeared to him in a dream, placed a hand on his shoulder and asked him to follow. He recalled that the figure asked what talent he had, and when he replied that he could draw, the stranger promised to “announce” him to the world if he was willing to follow. According to Hakeem, the same dream kept recurring as he joined a church choir and later a drama group, where he was unexpectedly assigned to provide special effects despite not knowing what the term meant at the time. Atletico Madrid suffer fresh injury scare ahead Arsenal UCL showdown
Atletico Madrid have suffered a new injury concern after midfielder Pablo Barrios limped off during their 3–2 La Liga win over Athletic Club just days before their Champions League semi final showdown with Arsenal. Barrios was restored to the starting lineup on Saturday as Diego Simeone rotated his squad following the recent defeat to Elche, with the coach clearly managing minutes ahead of the European tie. However, the youngster was unable to complete the game and had to be substituted shortly before the hour mark, making way for Johnny Cardoso. The manner of his withdrawal and his visible discomfort on the pitch have raised serious doubts over his availability for both legs of the semi […]

Osimhen cleared to face Fenerbahçe in title defining Istanbul derby
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has been cleared to play in Sunday’s high stakes Istanbul derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe after concerns over his protective arm brace were dismissed by Turkish football authorities. Osimhen featured in Galatasaray’s midweek defeat to Gençlerbirliği wearing the brace, which he has been using for protection following a recent arm injury. Fenerbahçe subsequently lodged an official complaint with the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), arguing that the gear could pose a danger to opposing players. After reviewing the case, the federation rejected Fenerbahçe’s protest and confirmed that the brace had been medically approved. Officials said all necessary consultations were carried out before Osimhen was authorised to use the support in competitive matches. Fenerbahçe’s unease is understood to be tied to the importance of the derby in the tight Super Lig title race. Galatasaray currently hold a […]

In a statement issued on Thursday, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa raised concerns after videos emerged online showing Ghanaians being harassed in parts of South Africa. The ministry cited an incident in KwaZulu Natal where a Ghanaian legal resident was confronted and told to leave South Africa and “fix his country.” The statement warned of “escalating tensions” and advised Ghanaian citizens in affected areas to remain indoors for their safety where necessary. It noted that recent anti migrant protests and intimidation had heightened fears among foreign nationals. Nigeria’s stability key to Ghana’s security – President Mahama
Ghanaian President John Mahama has underscored the importance of Nigeria’s peace and prosperity to Ghana’s own security, describing the two nations as “twins of the same mother.” Speaking in Accra as Special Guest of Honour and Chief Host at the 4th African Heritage Awards, he said many Ghanaians trace their roots to Nigeria, particularly to Yoruba kingdoms, which makes developments in Nigeria a matter of “keen security interest” for Ghana. Mahama joked that the only real friction between the two countries comes from rivalry over Jollof rice and football, stressing that “otherwise, we are the same people.” Highlighting Nigeria’s population of about 250 million, he explained that Ghana’s prayers for Nigeria’s success stem from both brotherhood and self‑interest, noting that instability could push large numbers of Nigerians toward smaller neighbours like Ghana. He said he wakes up every day praying […]

Nigeria Ghana onion trade resumes after 5 day suspension
Cross border onion trade between Nigeria and Ghana has resumed after Nigerian exporters suspended a five day strike over harassment and seizures in Ghana. President of the National Onion Producers Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria NOPPMAN Aliyu Maitasamu Isah confirmed that transactions have fully restarted along the Ghana corridor and other export routes. He said the dispute was resolved after high level talks involving Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana and Ghana’s Minister of Trade, who intervened to calm tensions and restore confidence. According to him the agreement led to the release of previously detained trucks and a return to the status quo, allowing traders to operate as they did before the crisis. The strike was called earlier in the week after Nigerian onion traders at Kotoku Market in Accra reported harassment, intimidation and the seizure of trucks loaded with […]
