Iran Guards say they turned back three ships in Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have announced that they turned back three container ships attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, declaring the strategic waterway closed to vessels travelling to and from ports belonging to allies of the United States and Israel. The Guards said the move came after what they called “lies” by US President Donald Trump, who had claimed the strait remained open. According to a statement on the Sepah News website, the Guards warned that any vessel heading to or from ports of countries they described as “allies and supporters of the Zionist-American enemies” is now prohibited from passing through the corridor. They stressed that Iran would enforce this restriction as part of its response to the ongoing war sparked by US and Israeli attacks on February 28. Energy market intelligence firm Kpler said it identified two container ships […]

Iran warns hotels housing US troops will be targets

Iran’s military has warned that hotels accommodating United States soldiers across the Middle East will be treated as legitimate targets in its ongoing war with the US and Israel. Armed forces spokesman Abolfazl Shekarchi told state television that once American troops move into a hotel, “from our perspective that hotel becomes American,” insisting Iran will strike wherever US forces are located. Shekarchi argued that Iran cannot “stand by and let the Americans strike us” without responding in kind, signalling a further escalation in a conflict that has already engulfed large parts of the region. The war exploded after Israel and the US launched strikes on Iran on February 28, killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and triggering waves of Iranian drone and missile attacks on Israel and US interests. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused US soldiers of using civilians […]

IG unveils framework for state police operations, safeguards

The push to establish state police in Nigeria gained momentum yesterday as Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu, through the chairman of the Nigeria Police Force Committee on State Police, Prof. Olu Ogunsakin, submitted a comprehensive framework to the Senate. The 75-page proposal, presented to Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, is expected to guide ongoing constitutional amendments needed to create state police across the country. The committee recommended moving policing from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent List to make state police constitutionally possible. It also proposed the creation of a Nigeria Police Service at the federal level and State Police Services for sub-national governments, with clearly defined jurisdictions to avoid overlapping duties. As part of safeguards, the framework insists that election security and related matters should remain under the control of the federal police. It further outlines multi-layered accountability […]

2027: Support for Tinubu deepens rift in PDP

Fresh tension has erupted in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as internal divisions widen over whether the opposition party should back President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 or present its own presidential candidate. A faction led by former minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, with the support of Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde, has firmly rejected any plan to adopt Tinubu, insisting it would be “improper” for an opposition party to endorse the flag bearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. The rival camp, aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, is more open to supporting Tinubu and currently backs the National Caretaker Committee organising Sunday’s March 29 national convention in Abuja. This has left the PDP effectively split into two blocs, even as reconciliation talks continue and some court cases are expected to be withdrawn if a political […]

Maguire says Amorim will succeed elsewhere despite Man United struggles

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has reflected on Rúben Amorim’s turbulent spell at Old Trafford, saying the Portuguese manager’s ideas simply did not click at the club despite his belief that Amorim will enjoy major success in the future. In an interview with The Guardian, Maguire praised Amorim as a talented coach and refused to criticise him personally.
