US President Donald Trump has travelled to China for a crucial summit with President Xi Jinping, declaring that he does not expect to need Beijing’s help to end the ongoing war with Iran. Speaking to reporters before departing Washington, Trump downplayed China’s potential role in resolving the conflict, which has severely disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
“I don’t think we need any help with Iran. We’ll win it one way or the other, peacefully or otherwise,” he said, in comments that underscored his determination to project confidence despite mounting costs and diplomatic pressure. Despite publicly insisting he does not need Xi’s assistance, Trump acknowledged he will still have “a long talk” with the Chinese leader about Iran during their meetings in Beijing on May 14 and 15. The two leaders are also expected to discuss trade, technology restrictions and efforts to extend a fragile truce in their broader economic dispute.
Trump’s tough language on Iran comes as ceasefire efforts face setbacks and Tehran tightens its grip on Hormuz in response to US military actions and sanctions. Observers say his comments are aimed partly at domestic audiences, projecting strength ahead of the 2026 political season while leaving room for behind-the-scenes diplomacy with both China and regional actors.
