UN to cut 15% of 2026 budget as US funding gap widens

The United Nations will slash its 2026 regular budget by 15%, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced Tuesday, citing deepening financial strains worsened by US President Donald Trump’s funding policies. The revised proposal sets the budget at $3.238 billion, down from $3.7 billion in 2025, and includes the elimination of 2,681 jobs. Cuts will affect the UN’s work on peace and security, human rights, and sustainable development, though programs targeting least-developed nations will be spared. “For some colleagues, these changes may mean relocation for themselves and their families. For others, separation from service,” Guterres told staff in a letter. At least 200 staff in Geneva and New York would be moved to lower-cost cities like Nairobi, officials said. The UN has faced chronic liquidity crises due to late or missing member contributions. The United States, historically funding 22% of the UN’s core […]

UK inflation steady at 3.8% as BoE set to hold rates

UK inflation remained unchanged at 3.8% in August, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), matching July’s figure and analysts’ expectations. The data comes just ahead of the Bank of England’s policy meeting on Thursday, where markets widely expect the central bank to hold interest rates at 4% after cutting them last month to their lowest in 2.5 years. The BoE has forecast inflation to peak at 4% in September, double its 2% target, suggesting a “higher-for-longer” rate environment. Lindsay James, investment strategist at Quilter, said the figures “will keep pressure on households already contending with elevated living costs and on businesses facing squeezed demand.” The ONS noted that airfares fell in August after a sharp July jump, but petrol, diesel and food prices continued to climb. The government is also battling weak growth and jobs concerns. Official data […]

World Bank: Poor sanitation costs Africa $200bn yearly

The World Bank has revealed that Africa loses an estimated $200 billion annually due to poor sanitation, warning that the crisis is undermining economic growth, public health, and climate resilience across the continent. In its latest report titled “The Global Sanitation Crisis: Pathways for Urgent Action” released on Tuesday, the Bank said nearly two in five people worldwide lack access to safe sanitation, with Africa carrying a disproportionate share of the burden. The study estimated that Africa’s GDP could rise by up to 5% if governments and stakeholders invested adequately in water and sanitation systems. “Every US$1 spent in Africa returns US$7 – adequate funding in the sector could boost GDP by 5 per cent, resulting in an annual economic gain of US$200 billion in Africa alone,” the report stated. SSANU, NASU give FG 7-day strike notice over unpaid allowances

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government over unresolved welfare issues, warning of a nationwide strike. In a joint letter signed by SSANU President, Muhammed Ibrahim, the unions decried the “unjust disbursement of earned allowances, non-payment of outstanding salaries and arrears, and stalled renegotiation of agreements.” The letter recalled that the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU had earlier written to the government on June 18, 2025, highlighting unresolved matters. That letter led to a meeting with the Minister on July 4. According to the unions, discussions centred on: the skewed N50bn earned allowances distribution, non-payment of two months’ withheld salaries, arrears of 25/35% salary increments, and the delayed renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreement. While a […]
