Japanese party to install AI as new political leader

A small Japanese political party announced Tuesday it will appoint an artificial intelligence system as its new leader, following the resignation of its founder after a poor election performance. The Path to Rebirth party, launched in January 2024 by Shinji Ishimaru, a former mayor in western Japan, said the AI would oversee internal decisions such as resource allocation but would not dictate policy to members. “The new leader will be AI,” said Koki Okumura, a 25-year-old doctoral student in artificial intelligence at Kyoto University, who will act as the party’s nominal leader and assistant to the AI. Details of the AI’s design and implementation have yet to be decided. The party has no unified policy platform, instead allowing members to set their own agendas. Ishimaru rose to prominence after an online-driven campaign in 2024 saw him place second in the […]

London tribunal dismisses ownership claim on Useni-linked property

A London First-Tier Tribunal (Property Chamber) has dismissed an ownership claim on a property allegedly linked to the late General Jeremiah Useni, Nigeria’s former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The case was brought by one Tali Shani, who challenged human rights lawyer Chief Mike Ozekhome’s attempt to register ownership of the property at 79 Randall Avenue, London, which he said had been gifted to him by Gen. Useni. The tribunal struck out the case after finding that the applicant “likely never existed” and had relied on forged documents, including fake identity papers and a death certificate. Background Chief Ozekhome applied in August 2021 to register a transfer of the property, purportedly signed by “Tali Shani.” But before registration was completed, someone claiming to be Shani appeared before the tribunal, denying knowledge of the transfer and insisting she was the […]

US aid cuts push Zimbabwe’s sex workers into dangerous choices

In Harare’s crumbling outskirts, sex worker Sharon Mukakanhanga clutched a pair of baby socks — the desperate substitute she once used when condoms ran out. “These little socks served as condoms when I became so desperate after the American government withdrew its support,” the 43-year-old said, recalling how US aid cuts gutted her trusted health clinic. Mukakanhanga is one of thousands of sex workers left scrambling for protection since US President Donald Trump cut foreign health aid earlier this year. The move crippled HIV prevention programmes in Zimbabwe that had relied heavily on PEPFAR, Washington’s flagship HIV initiative. Rising deaths, shrinking support Official figures show 5,932 AIDS-related deaths in the first half of 2025, up from 5,712 a year earlier. Clinics once stocked with free condoms and antiretrovirals are now shuttered or overwhelmed. “It was a very difficult period. I […]
