Afrobeat Rising Star Charlsly Shines With New Single Ikebe

Charles Ibhagbe, known professionally as Charlsly, is making waves in the Afrobeat music scene following the release of his latest single, Ikebe (Big Ass). Born on February 26 in Edo State, Nigeria, Charlsly represents the new wave of Afrobeat artists who are blending African rhythms with global sounds. Splitting his time between Nigeria and Spain, he draws inspiration from his roots while infusing international influences into his music. His new track, Ikebe, celebrates beauty, confidence, and dance culture. With its vibrant beat and catchy delivery, listeners and critics alike are calling it a potential club anthem. Music observers note that Charlsly’s approach mirrors a growing Afrobeat trend: fusing local street sounds with global elements to appeal to a broader audience. This cross-cultural experimentation, they say, is helping Afrobeat strengthen its global reach. Though still an emerging talent, Charlsly’s bold style […]

Howe confident Newcastle will find ‘X factor’

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe insists his side will soon rediscover their attacking edge despite struggling for goals since the departure of star striker Alexander Isak. Isak, 26, completed a British record £125m move to Liverpool on deadline day, leaving a huge void in the Magpies’ attack. Howe responded by signing Germany international Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for a club-record £69m, while Yoane Wissa arrived from Brentford in a £55m deal. But Newcastle’s frontline has yet to click. Woltemade, 23, scored on his debut in a 1-0 win over Wolves on September 13, but drew a blank in Sunday’s goalless draw at Bournemouth. Wissa, meanwhile, is still sidelined with a knee injury. Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s League Cup third-round tie against Bradford City, Howe admitted the transition will take time but expressed faith in his new-look attack. “In an ideal […]

UN slams ‘systematic’ Russian torture of Ukraine civilians

The United Nations has accused Russia of subjecting civilians in occupied Ukrainian territories to torture, including sexual violence, in what it described as a “widespread and systematic” campaign. In a damning report released Tuesday, the UN rights office said that since Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russian authorities have carried out consistent patterns of serious violations of international law against civilian detainees. Investigators interviewed 216 civilians who had been released from detention in Russian-controlled areas since June 2023. Alarmingly, 92% reported torture or ill-treatment, providing consistent and detailed accounts of abuse. Methods described included: Severe beatings with batons and sticks Electric shocks applied to different body parts Mock executions and other forms of psychological abuse UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk condemned the findings, saying: “People have been arbitrarily picked off the streets in occupied territory, charged […]

Man charged with shining laser pointer at Trump’s Marine One helicopter

US authorities have charged a man for pointing a laser pointer at Marine One, the presidential helicopter, while it departed the White House with former President Donald Trump aboard. According to a court filing on Monday, Jacob Samuel Winkler, 33, was spotted by a Secret Service officer shining a red laser beam from the sidewalk outside the White House grounds as Marine One lifted off on Saturday. Winkler was immediately detained and charged with aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft — a federal felony punishable by up to five years in prison. The affidavit noted that his actions posed a significant risk of flash blindness and pilot disorientation, particularly during low-altitude flight in the busy Washington, D.C. airspace near other helicopters and landmarks such as the Washington Monument. “This placed Marine One at risk of an airborne collision,” the […]

Cybercrime threatens Nigeria’s development, group warns

The Chief Executive Officer of the We Love Nigeria Unity and Peace Initiative (We Love Nigeria), Anaba Chimele Anthony, has cautioned that cybercrime poses a serious danger to Nigeria’s growth and future development. Speaking in Abuja during the launch of a nationwide sensitisation campaign against internet fraud, Anthony described cybercrime as a growing national embarrassment, particularly among young people. He explained that the grassroots campaign would reach universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, secondary schools, religious centres, diaspora communities, and public spaces to educate Nigerians on the dangers of internet fraud. “Internet fraud and cybercrime by our youths both at home and abroad have become a national embarrassment, turning into an ideology. We are stepping in to complement the efforts of security and intelligence agencies by taking this message to the grassroots,” Anthony said. He commended the Economic and Financial Crimes […]

Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger quit International Criminal Court

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger on Monday announced their withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), describing it as a tool of “neo-colonial repression.” In a joint statement, the three military-led governments accused the court of bias and failing to prosecute major global crimes. They said the ICC had “proven itself incapable of handling and prosecuting war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and aggression.” The decision comes after a series of coups in Bamako, Ouagadougou, and Niamey between 2020 and 2023, which led the countries to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). Since then, they have distanced themselves from Western powers, especially former colonial ruler France, while strengthening ties with Russia. The statement added that the countries intend to build “indigenous mechanisms for peace and justice” instead of relying on international institutions. Under ICC rules, a withdrawal only takes […]

Nigeria’s FX reserves hit $42bn, strongest in six years

Nigeria’s external reserves have climbed to their highest level in six years, crossing the $42bn mark for the first time since September 2019. Latest figures from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) show reserves stood at $42.03bn on September 19, 2025, up from $41.99bn the previous day. This represents a $40m increase in one day and a sharp rebound from earlier lows this year. The last time reserves were higher was on September 26, 2019, when they reached $42.05bn. Since then, reserves have come under pressure from weaker oil prices, high import demand, and foreign capital outflows. Unlike past temporary spikes, the current rally has shown consistency. Reserves have grown for 13 out of 14 trading days in September, gaining $610.8m (1.47%) between September 1 and 19 alone. In the second half of the month, reserves rose by nearly $583m […]

No visa for corrupt Nigerian officials — US Mission

The United States Mission in Nigeria has vowed to clamp down on corruption by barring corrupt, high-profile Nigerian officials from entering the country. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) yesterday, the Mission warned that its anti-corruption stance would not spare anyone, regardless of status or influence.“Fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability. Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving U.S. visas,” the Mission stated. The move aligns with Washington’s long-standing policy of using visa restrictions as part of its broader anti-corruption and human rights enforcement tools, targeting individuals implicated in graft, election interference, or abuse of office. Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, opposition party Reform UK unveiled a radical new immigration policy that would abolish the right of migrants to apply for permanent settlement — known as Indefinite Leave to Remain […]

N’Assembly backs Tinubu’s borrowing policy – Speaker Abbas

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has clarified that the National Assembly is not opposed to President Bola Tinubu’s borrowing policy, affirming that lawmakers support borrowing as a legitimate fiscal tool to fund infrastructure and stimulate sustainable growth. Abbas made this known in Abuja on Monday while delivering the keynote address at the 8th Annual African Network of Parliamentary Budget Offices (AN-PBO) Conference, organised by the National Assembly in collaboration with the National Assembly Budget and Research Office. The conference, themed “The Role of PBOs in African Parliaments’ Fiscal Oversight: Contribution to the African 2063 Development Agenda,” brought together African parliamentarians and fiscal experts. His remarks followed media reports suggesting legislative unease with the administration’s debt strategy, particularly after concerns were raised at the 11th Annual Conference of the West Africa Association of Public Accounts Committees. At […]
