Suspected cultists kill man in Ogun community

Tension gripped Atan-Ota, Ado-Odo-Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Sunday after a suspected cult clash claimed the life of a man identified as Moses. Residents alleged that members of the Aye Confraternity were behind the killing. Disturbing videos from the scene showed the attackers repeatedly striking the victim’s wrist with machetes while boasting in pidgin, “We are the ones in charge.” The footage also captured Moses lying motionless on the ground as the assailants inflicted multiple machete cuts. Another clip showed his lifeless body, with mourners crying out his name in grief. Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, CSP Omolola Odutola, told reporters simply: “Yes,” when asked about Moses’ death. Although Ogun State has recorded fewer cult-related clashes in recent months, the killing underscores the persistence of cult violence in the South-West. In […]

FG rejects US report on lack of transparency in procurement

The Federal Government has dismissed a report by the United States Department of State alleging that Nigeria lacks transparency in its public procurement process. The 2025 Fiscal Transparency Report had listed Nigeria among 32 African countries said to have made little or no progress in the fiscal policy space. While acknowledging that Nigeria had improved in publishing budget documents and debt obligations, the report faulted the country for failing to disclose information on public procurement contracts. It also criticised the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation for not publishing comprehensive audit reports, citing weak institutional independence as a major setback. The report recommended that Nigeria should strengthen the independence of its supreme audit institution, make procurement information easily accessible, and publish timely audit reports of executed budgets. Out of 139 countries and the Palestinian Authority assessed, the report found […]

Tinubu: Constitution review will strengthen democracy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged his administration’s full support for ongoing constitutional reforms, describing the exercise as vital to deepening Nigeria’s democracy, strengthening institutions, and protecting citizens’ rights. Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, Tinubu spoke at the National Public Hearing on the Review of the 1999 Constitution in Abuja. He described the review as a “golden opportunity” to entrench good governance, inclusivity, and sustainable development. “The Constitution is the supreme law of the land. It is not static, but a living document that must continually respond to the realities, aspirations, and challenges of our people,” Tinubu said, noting that the exercise aligns with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The President commended the House of Representatives Constitution Review Committee, chaired by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, for creating an inclusive platform that […]

Okonjo-Iweala: How Nigeria can lead AfCFTA

Nigeria can emerge as a leader under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) if it tackles logistics bottlenecks, invests in value addition, and builds efficient payment systems, according to World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Speaking at the WTO Public Forum in Geneva, Switzerland, Okonjo-Iweala urged Nigeria and other African nations to fast-track AfCFTA implementation, expand infrastructure, and cut trade costs to unlock billions of dollars in opportunities across manufacturing, services, and digital trade. “The AfCFTA is a great step, but Africa still trades only 15–20% within itself, compared to 60% in the European Union. We need to accelerate implementation so Africans trade more with each other,” she said. She cited examples such as Lesotho, which exports $200 million worth of textiles annually to the U.S.—about 10% of its GDP—while Africa imports $7 billion worth of similar […]

$2m fraud: Nigerian faces 20 years in US prison

A United Kingdom-based Nigerian, Olamide Shanu, faces up to 20 years in prison in the United States after being extradited over a $2 million fraud case. The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) announced on Thursday that the 34-year-old, originally from Lagos State, was arraigned before a U.S. Magistrate Court on Wednesday. He is facing an eight-count charge, including wire fraud conspiracy, aggravated identity theft, money laundering conspiracy, extortion, and cyberstalking. According to prosecutors, Shanu and his co-conspirators posed as women on social media, luring male victims into sharing explicit photos. The suspects allegedly used the images to blackmail the victims, threatening to expose them to friends and family unless they paid money. The indictment also claims Shanu laundered proceeds from the scheme through cryptocurrency wallets. Prosecutors said the network extorted numerous victims across the United States, including a college student […]

Borno terror attack victims hospitalised in Cameroon

Confusion surrounds the number of military casualties after terrorists attacked the 152 Task Force Battalion in Banki, a border town in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State. Local officials confirmed that at least five civilians were killed in the Thursday night assault, while several others were injured and evacuated across the border to Mora, Cameroon, for treatment. Many residents fled the community in fear of further violence. The attack follows the recent massacre in Darajamal, also in Bama LGA, where 63 people lost their lives. Defence Headquarters spokesperson, Maj. Gen. Markus Kangye, said one soldier died in the Banki incident but stressed that troops held their ground. “It’s true our troops had an encounter with the terrorists in Banki. The troops were not dislodged. There was a serious firefight, and though we lost a soldier, the troops remain at […]

Nigeria supplies 67.6m barrels of crude to local refineries

The Federal Government says 67,657,559 barrels of crude oil were supplied to Nigerian refineries between January and August 2025. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) confirmed the figure, noting that deliveries went to both modular and state-owned refineries such as Waltersmith, Aradel Energy, and Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) facilities. Eniola Akinkuotu, Head of Media and Strategic Communications at NUPRC, explained that the supplies were made under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 and the Domestic Crude Supply Obligation (DCSO) policy, which requires producers to reserve a portion of crude for local processors before export. Despite this allocation, refiners received far less than they requested. Industry data shows local plants demanded 123.5 million barrels for the first half of 2025, but only 67.6 million barrels were delivered over eight months—about 45% less than required. Earlier projections suggested that […]

Global divisions deepen as more nations back Palestinian State

Momentum is growing for international recognition of a Palestinian State, even as the United States and Israel strongly oppose the move. On Monday, Britain formally recognised Palestine, following similar steps by Canada and Australia. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the recognition “keeps alive the possibility of peace,” while reaffirming support for efforts to free Israeli hostages. As of September 2025, 150 of the 193 UN member states — over 78% — now recognise Palestine as a sovereign state. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had already granted Palestine non-member observer status in 2012. However, U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed the endorsements, calling them a “reward for terrorism.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was even more forceful, declaring: “There will be no Palestinian State west of the Jordan River.” Netanyahu argued that recognising Palestine undermines peace, while pledging to expand […]

LGBTQ community fears crackdown after Burkina Faso law

Members of Burkina Faso’s LGBTQ community say a new law criminalising same-sex relationships has pushed them further into hiding, raising fears of a “witch hunt.” The legislation, adopted this month by the country’s ruling junta, introduces penalties of up to five years in prison and fines for those convicted of “homosexual practices.” It is part of a new family code but has not yet come into effect. Quentin, a young gay man whose name has been changed for safety, told AFP the law could embolden people to target LGBTQ individuals.“With this law, there will be no more respite. People will feel it’s their mission to track down gay people,” he said. Other community members echoed these concerns, warning that the law could fuel public hostility. Before the legislation, many LGBTQ people already hid their identities to avoid stigma and family […]

Nigerian women demand reserved seats in parliament

Hundreds of women marched through Abuja on Monday to demand the passage of a bill that would reserve seats for women in Nigeria’s parliament. The proposed legislation, known as the Special Seats Bill, seeks to create one women-only seat in the Senate and House of Representatives for each of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. If passed, the measure would require a constitutional amendment. Nigeria currently has one of the lowest levels of female representation in Africa, with only four women in the 109-seat Senate and 16 women in the 360-member House of Representatives, according to the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC). Many African countries, including Rwanda and Senegal, have successfully used quota systems to boost women’s participation in politics. “We want the legislature to work for women,” said activist Dorothy Njemanze, one of the organisers, who […]
