Singapore gives Meta Sept 30 deadline to curb govt impersonation scams

The Singapore government has given Meta until September 30 to crack down on the surge of scams on Facebook that impersonate government officials or risk heavy financial penalties. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), police issued a directive requiring Meta to remove or block scam advertisements, accounts, profiles, and business pages impersonating key government figures. Failure to comply could see Meta fined up to S$1 million (US$776,000), with an additional S$100,000 daily fine if the violations persist after conviction. The ministry highlighted a sharp increase in impersonation scams between June 2024 and June 2025, with Facebook cited as the main platform used by fraudsters. Authorities said that although Meta has introduced global anti-scam measures, such as enhanced detection systems, scammers in Singapore continue to exploit its platform. This is the first time Singapore has invoked its Online Criminal […]

Japan cancels ‘Africa Hometown’ project after visa mix-up with Nigeria

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has scrapped its “JICA Africa Hometown” initiative, citing widespread “misunderstandings and confusion” over the programme. The decision, announced in a statement on JICA’s website Thursday, comes weeks after claims circulated that Japan would create a special visa category for young Nigerians wishing to relocate to Kisarazu, a Japanese city designated as a “hometown” under the scheme. On August 26, the Nigerian presidency issued a statement saying Japan planned to introduce a visa route for highly skilled and innovative Nigerians to live and work in Kisarazu. The Japanese government quickly denied the report, stressing that the programme was never immigration-related. Clarifying its position, JICA said the terminology used—particularly the designation of Japanese municipalities as “hometowns”—sparked confusion and placed “an excessive burden” on the four host municipalities. The agency explained: “Originally, under this initiative, it was […]

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced a $10,000 bounty for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Olumide Adebiyi Adediran, a Nigerian national wanted for multiple fraud-related offences in the United States. According to a statement released on the FBI’s website on Wednesday, the 56-year-old fugitive is facing charges of bank fraud, identity document fraud, and credit card fraud linked to alleged crimes in Illinois dating back to 2001. Anderson, allegedly attempted to cash fraudulent checks and used stolen identities of US citizens to open bank and credit accounts. The FBI said he fled the Central District of Illinois in December 2001, shortly before his trial was due to begin. A federal arrest warrant was issued on January […]

Rudeboy threatens lawsuit against X user over defamatory claims

Nigerian music star Paul Okoye, popularly known as Rudeboy of the defunct P-Square duo, has vowed to take legal action against a social media user who accused him of misconduct involving a domestic worker. The controversy began after photos from the 25th birthday celebration of Rudeboy’s wife, Ivy Ifeoma, surfaced on X (formerly Twitter). An account with the handle @chubbiedivah alleged that the singer coerced a household help, even implying the woman was underage at the time. The claims were further amplified by another user, @darkskinnedtemi, who described herself as a feminist and added critical remarks. The post quickly reached Rudeboy’s fan base, who flagged the defamatory allegations to him. In an unusually fiery response, the “Reason With Me” crooner vowed to make an example of the poster. “I hardly reply, but you see this one @chubbiedivah, if you like […]

White House orders US agencies to prepare for mass sack ahead of possible shutdown

The White House has directed federal agencies to prepare for large-scale staff cuts if the US government shuts down next week, according to a memo from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) obtained by Politico. The document, circulated on Wednesday, indicated that President Donald Trump’s administration may go beyond the usual temporary furloughs seen in previous shutdowns. Instead, agencies were instructed to draw up staff reduction plans and notify employees in programs not legally mandated to continue. “Programs that did not benefit from an infusion of mandatory appropriations will bear the brunt of a shutdown,” the memo said. The warning comes as the Trump administration clashes with congressional Democrats over funding ahead of a looming Sept. 30 fiscal deadline. Last week, Senate Democrats rejected a stopgap funding bill hurriedly passed by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. In response, Trump […]

Japan: Woman arrested for hiding daughter’s body in freezer for 20 years

Japanese police have arrested a 75-year-old woman who admitted to keeping her daughter’s body in a freezer for nearly two decades. Police in Ibaraki prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, said investigators discovered the remains on Tuesday after the suspect, identified as Keiko Mori, came forward with a relative to report her actions. The body, dressed in a T-shirt and underwear, was found kneeling face-down inside a deep freezer in her home. Police believe the deceased to be Makiko, Mori’s daughter, born in 1975. She would have been about 49 or 50 years old if alive. “The body showed signs of advanced decay,” a police spokesperson said, adding that an autopsy will determine the cause of death. Mori reportedly told police she purchased the freezer because the body’s smell was filling the house. She has since been arrested on suspicion of abandoning […]

Sarkozy convicted of criminal conspiracy in Libya campaign finance trial

A Paris court on Thursday convicted former French president Nicolas Sarkozy on charges of criminal conspiracy in connection with allegations that late Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi helped finance his 2007 presidential campaign. The court, however, acquitted Sarkozy of corruption, embezzlement, and accepting illegal campaign funds. Sarkozy, 70, who led France from 2007 to 2012, has consistently denied any wrongdoing. He has already been convicted in two other cases and was stripped of the Legion of Honour, France’s highest distinction. Presiding judge Nathalie Gavarino said Sarkozy, as a minister and party leader at the time, “allowed his close collaborators and political supporters over whom he had authority and who acted in his name” to engage with Libyan officials to secure financial support. Prosecutors had requested a seven-year prison sentence, though sentencing is expected later in the hearing. Sarkozy attended the verdict […]

Ronaldo backs Neymar’s World Cup return, urges Ancelotti to recall star forward

Brazilian football legend Ronaldo Nazário has urged national team coach Carlo Ancelotti to bring Neymar Jr. back into the Selecão squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Neymar, Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals in 128 matches, has not featured for the national team since suffering a serious knee injury in October 2023. The 33-year-old forward returned to boyhood club Santos in January 2025 after an underwhelming spell with Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal, where injuries limited him to just five appearances and one goal. Despite regaining form in Brazil, Ancelotti has yet to call him up in his four matches in charge. Speaking at a publicity event in São Paulo, Ronaldo made a passionate case for Neymar’s return: “He is a decisive player for the Brazilian Selecão. We don’t have […]
