US pushes plan to disarm Hamas and rebuild Gaza

An Ivory Coast court has sentenced 32 people to three years in prison for taking part in banned protests held earlier this month, just days before the country’s presidential election. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday, four days before the vote, as tensions rise between the government and opposition supporters. The protests were organized after opposition leaders Laurent Gbagbo and Tidjane Thiam were barred from running against President Alassane Ouattara, who is seeking a fourth term at age 83. The defendants were convicted of “disturbing public order” and “assembling on public roadways.” Last week, about 30 other protesters received similar sentences. Authorities have banned all demonstrations, citing threats to public safety. Public prosecutor Oumar Braman Kone said some protests amounted to “acts of terrorism” and argued that “the freedom to demonstrate cannot be confused with disorder.” Defence lawyers argued there […]

The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the alleged use of toxic and cancer-causing chemicals to preserve frozen foods sold in Nigerian markets. The decision followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon. Deacon Chike Okafor (APC, Imo) during plenary, titled “Need to Investigate the Alleged Use of Harmful Chemicals as Preservatives for Frozen Foods in Nigeria.” Presenting the motion, Okafor expressed concern over reports that some vendors use industrial and embalming substances such as formalin, sodium hydroxide, and carbide to preserve perishable food items like fish, meat, prawns, and shrimps. He warned that these chemicals pose serious health risks, including cancer, organ damage, and developmental disorders in children, citing findings from health experts and regulatory agencies. The lawmaker also raised alarm over reports that some imported frozen foods and fast-food chains use unsafe additives such as Dimethylpolysiloxane […]

US Missionary Abducted in Niger’s Capital Niamey

A United States missionary working for the evangelical Christian organisation SIM has been abducted in Niamey, the capital of Niger, diplomatic and security sources confirmed on Wednesday. The unnamed victim, a man in his 50s, was reportedly kidnapped on Tuesday and is believed to be “already en route for the border with Mali,” according to a diplomatic source familiar with the case. CAN Accuses Presidency of Distorting Its Stance on Christian Killings

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has publicly accused the Presidency of misrepresenting its position on the killings of Christians in the country, leading to a dispute after a meeting meant to foster dialogue. CAN stated that it did not, at any point, dismiss the violence as a "so-called Christian genocide," contrary to a press release from the President's media aide, Daniel Bwala. The association insists that the persistent, organized attacks on Christian communities in Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt amount to a "Christian genocide." CAN expressed deep disappointment, stating that the Presidency's report was "completely false and grossly unfair." They clarified that their position remains unchanged and that the government's portrayal trivializes the pain of the victims. The Christian body is now calling on the Federal Government and security agencies to act with urgency and transparency to halt […]
