Pope Leo XIV has visited Istanbul’s famed Blue Mosque as part of his first foreign trip since becoming head of the Catholic Church. Following the example of his predecessors, Leo removed his shoes and spent a quiet moment in reflection, seen as a gesture of respect toward the country’s Muslim majority. The Blue Mosque visit is one of several symbolic moments on a trip focused on dialogue between Christians and Muslims and support for Christian communities in the Middle East. Jimmy Cliff: the voice that carried reggae to the world

Jimmy Cliff, born James Chambers in 1944 in rural Jamaica, emerged as one of the first artists to carry Jamaican music from local dancehalls to global stages. Moving from ska and rocksteady into early reggae, he forged a high, urgent vocal style that captured both the hope and hardship of post‑independence Jamaica. His international breakthrough came in the late 1960s with songs such as “Wonderful World, Beautiful People” and the anti‑war anthem “Vietnam,” which mixed upbeat rhythms with sharp social commentary and gained attention in both Europe and the Americas. Cliff’s ability to blend protest themes with radio‑friendly melodies became a template for politically conscious reggae. In 1972, he starred as outlaw dreamer Ivan in the cult film “The Harder They Come,” whose soundtrack – featuring “The Harder They Come,” “Many Rivers to Cross” and “You Can Get It If […]

He stressed that City must treat every league game like a final, warning that any further mistakes could prove costly in such a tight campaign. City host struggling Leeds United next, a fixture many expect them to win comfortably at the Etihad. The United States has frozen all asylum decisions after an Afghan national allegedly shot two National Guard members near the White House, killing one and critically injuring the other. Appeal Court strikes out Nnamdi Kanu’s rights violation case

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has struck out an appeal by convicted IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, ruling that his case alleging violations of fundamental rights by the Director General of the DSS and the Attorney-General of the Federation lacked merit and had become academic. The court held that Kanu’s complaint could no longer stand following his November 20 conviction for terrorism offences by a Federal High Court and his subsequent life imprisonment and remand in prison custody. In the lead judgment, Justice Boloukuromo Moses Ugo said that once Kanu’s counsel, Maxwell Opara, confirmed that his client was now held at Sokoto prison, the request to be moved from the DSS facility to Kuje prison was no longer one the appellate court could grant. The judge added that Kanu had previously indicated a preference for prison custody, so his prayers […]
