CAF opens disciplinary probe after Nigeria’s win over Algeria

The Confederation of African Football has opened a disciplinary investigation into incidents that followed Nigeria’s 2–0 victory over Algeria in the AFCON 2025 quarterfinals in Morocco. CAF said its disciplinary board is reviewing reports from match officials, security personnel and media representatives before deciding on sanctions.​ Tensions reportedly boiled over at full time, with several Algerian players and officials confronting referee Issa Sy and his assistants over disputed decisions. Police arrest 50 protesters after Ekpoma anti kidnap rally

Police have arrested about 50 people in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, after a protest over rising kidnapping turned violent. The demonstration, which began on Saturday as a peaceful march against insecurity, later saw bonfires and the blocking of major roads, including the Benin Abuja highway.​ The Edo State Police Command said hoodlums hijacked the protest and were involved in looting, vandalising shops and attacking traders. 95 princes, princesses show interest in Awujale stool

At least 95 princes and princesses have formally indicated interest in becoming the next Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland. The stool became vacant following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona in July 2025 after about 65 years on the throne.​ The Fusengbuwa ruling house, which is next in line to produce the new Awujale, has begun the internal process of screening and shortlisting interested members. Army troops rescue 18 passengers from sea pirates off Cameroon coast

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade have rescued 18 passengers, including two infants, after suspected sea pirates hijacked a passenger boat on the Nigeria Cameroon route. The attack happened on January 11 near Kombo Fishing Port within Cameroonian waters while the boat was travelling from Nigeria to Cameroon.​ Army spokesperson Major Yemi Sokoya said the pirates, operating in two speed boats and a wooden boat, seized the passenger vessel and abducted all those on board. Soldiers deployed to Ikang responded quickly to a distress call, pursued the attackers and engaged them in a gun battle.​ During the firefight, one of the pirates’ speed boats capsized, forcing the attackers to abandon the kidnapped passengers and flee into nearby creeks.
