US President Donald Trump says the United States will take control of Greenland “one way or the other,” warning that Russia or China could move in if Washington does not act. He describes the mineral rich Arctic territory, which is part of Denmark, as vital for US security because of growing Russian and Chinese activity in the region.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump says he prefers to reach a deal with Greenland’s self governing authorities but is ready to consider tougher options if negotiations fail. He argues that countries should “own” key territory rather than rely on leases, and says the United States must be ready to defend Greenland as its own.
Trump has repeatedly suggested that if the US does not act, Russia or China will “take over” Greenland, a prospect he calls unacceptable. He also downplays concerns that such a move could strain NATO ties, saying the alliance needs the United States more than Washington needs it.
Denmark and Greenland have strongly rejected any idea of a US takeover and insist that Greenland’s people must decide their own future. Most political parties in Greenland oppose coming under US control and have criticised Trump’s remarks as disrespectful.
