Guardiola says he is hurt by human suffering in wars

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he feels deeply hurt by the suffering of civilians in wars and violent conflicts around the world. Guardiola recently missed a press conference before his team’s league match at Tottenham after giving a speech in Barcelona in support of Palestinian children at a charity event. He has often spoken about issues beyond football and said he will not stop, despite suggestions that he should focus only on the sport. Speaking ahead of City’s League Cup semi final second leg against Newcastle, he became emotional as he described watching news reports of children being killed or injured in different conflict zones. He mentioned violence in Palestine, Ukraine and Sudan, as well as recent shootings by United States immigration agency ICE, as events that have left him angry and determined to speak out. Guardiola said modern […]

Italy rules out ICE police role at Winter Games

Italy has ruled out any operational police role for United States immigration agency ICE during the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, following public anger over its planned presence. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi told parliament that only the Homeland Security Investigations arm of ICE will be in Italy and that its staff will work inside United States diplomatic missions. He stressed they are not operational agents and have no powers to carry out law enforcement activities on Italian soil. Piantedosi said criticism and fears about their role at the Games were completely unfounded. He explained that HSI focuses on global threats such as the illegal movement of people, goods and weapons and is separate from the part of ICE that leads the controversial immigration crackdown in the United States. The minister noted it is standard practice for countries to send security […]

Ghana inflation falls to five year low

Ghana’s inflation rate eased to 3.8 percent in January, the lowest level since the consumer price index was rebased in 2021, extending a 13 month run of slowing price growth. Data from the Ghana Statistical Service showed prices rose by 0.2 percent compared with December, as both food and non food costs continued to moderate. Food inflation slowed to 3.9 percent year on year, while non food prices declined by 0.4 percent on a monthly basis. The steady fall in inflation has encouraged the Bank of Ghana to shift policy. The central bank cut its benchmark interest rate by 250 basis points to 15.50 percent last week to support economic growth while keeping prices under control. Officials say the disinflation trend has been driven by a stronger cedi, lower import costs and better food supply, backed by tighter monetary policy […]

Trump’s tariff cut brings relief in India despite scant deal details

U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to slash tariffs on Indian goods to 18 per cent from 50 per cent has sparked relief and a market rally in India, even though both governments have released few formal details of the new trade deal. Trump announced on social media that Washington had agreed the cut in exchange for New Delhi halting imports of Russian oil and lowering trade barriers to U.S. products.
