FG pushes $5.7bn China investment talks to drive power, industrial growth

The Federal Government is advancing negotiations with Chinese investors on proposed projects worth about 5.7 billion dollars aimed at boosting power supply and accelerating Nigeria’s industrial growth. Officials say the talks are part of a broader strategy to attract strategic capital into energy, transport and industrial infrastructure to support President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms. According to government sources, the Chinese funding proposals cover new power generation and transmission projects, solar and clean energy investments, as well as industrial parks and manufacturing hubs in key states. The initiatives are expected to complement earlier Chinese commitments of over 20 billion dollars across agriculture, mining, automotive, steel and energy sectors. Nigeria is positioning itself as China’s top investment destination in Africa, leveraging existing rail, road and power partnerships and seeking new deals in digital infrastructure and green energy. FCT poll: Wike free to back any candidate he wants – APC

The All Progressives Congress has defended Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike’s decision to publicly back its candidates in the FCT Area Council elections, saying he has a constitutional right to support any candidate of his choice. The party dismissed opposition criticism of Wike’s role as misplaced and politically motivated. APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said on a television programme that Wike, a former Rivers State governor elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, remains a Nigerian citizen whose freedom of association and expression is guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution. He argued that nothing in the law stops the minister from campaigning for candidates in any party. Morka’s comments followed outrage in the PDP after two of its chairmanship candidates in Bwari and Abuja Municipal Area Council stepped down and endorsed APC rivals allegedly after […]

Court adjourns Tukur Mamu’s fundamental rights suit against AGF

Justice Mohammed Umar fixed the new date for adoption of final written addresses after asking counsel to further address the court on the relationship between Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution and Section 49 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022. The matter had earlier come up for adoption of written addresses but could not proceed. Mamu, through his lawyer Johnson Usman (SAN), argues that the AGF’s decision to label him a terrorist in official and media communications violates his right to presumption of innocence under Section 36(5) of the Constitution. He contends that it is illegal, immoral and against religious principles to brand him a terrorist before any conviction by the court where he is facing trial. Usman told the court that he attached printouts of media reports where Mamu was described as a terrorist to support the […]

APC: FCT, Kano, Rivers victories are clear referendum on Tinubu govt

The All Progressives Congress has described its victories in the recent elections in the Federal Capital Territory, Kano and Rivers States as a clear referendum in favour of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Party leaders say the results show growing public approval of the president’s reforms despite economic hardship and opposition criticism. In separate statements, the APC National Chairman, Prof Nentawe Yilwatda, and the Lagos State chapter hailed the outcomes as a “resounding endorsement” of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. They argued that voters used the FCT council polls and by elections in Rivers and Kano to reward the ruling party for what they called bold leadership, infrastructure projects and efforts to stabilise the economy. The Lagos APC spokesman, Seye Oladejo, said the “resounding victories” recorded by APC candidates across the affected constituencies reaffirm the electorate’s confidence in Tinubu’s policies at both […]

2027 polls: APC, four parties set as 16 others battle candidate crises

With less than a year to the start of candidate submissions for the 2027 general elections, only the ruling All Progressives Congress and four other parties are considered ready, while about 16 others are entangled in leadership and candidate selection crises. The situation follows the release of the 2027 election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which has intensified pressure on parties to put their houses in order. The APC is seen as the most organised, with President Bola Tinubu widely expected to seek a second term and face little or no internal challenge for the presidential ticket, even though party leaders insist the race remains formally open. A few smaller parties, including some with regional strength, have also begun early consultations and are close to resolving their presidential and governorship choices. In contrast, major opposition platforms like the […]
