OPL 245 deal to boost Nigeria’s oil output by 150,000 barrels daily

The Federal Government says resolving the long running dispute over Oil Prospecting Licence 245 will unlock new deepwater investment and raise Nigeria’s oil production by about 150,000 barrels per day when fully developed. The agreement, overseen by President Bola Tinubu and signed in Abuja, brings to an end more than 15 years of legal and commercial battles involving ENI, Nigerian Agip Exploration and other parties over ownership and terms of the block. Under the new structure, the controversial OPL 245 oilfield has been split into four separate assets to be operated by ENI and Shell, clearing a major obstacle that had stalled one of Nigeria’s largest untapped deepwater reserves. Officials say the settlement restores clarity and stability to the block, removes a prominent legacy risk in the upstream sector and sends a signal to investors that Nigeria is serious about […]

Iran fires missiles at Israel as US Republicans block bid to halt air war

Iran has launched a new wave of missiles at Israel, sending air raid sirens blaring and forcing millions of people into bomb shelters as the war entered its sixth day. The overnight barrage targeted sites across Israel and also triggered defensive action from nearby countries, including Turkey, where a missile was intercepted before entering its airspace. At the same time, Republican senators in Washington blocked a resolution that sought to halt the United States air campaign against Iran and require fresh congressional approval for any further military action. The war powers measure failed by 53 votes to 47, largely along party lines, leaving President Donald Trump with broad freedom to continue directing US strikes in support of Israel. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz that Washington would stand firmly behind Israel’s operations, saying the United […]

Afrobeat star reveals how Fela, Orlando Owoh shaped his sound

A Nigerian Afrobeat singer has credited music legends Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Orlando Owoh as major influences on his sound and approach to music. He explained that Fela’s socially conscious lyrics, powerful stage performances and use of music to challenge injustice inspired him to see Afrobeat as a tool for storytelling and activism, not just entertainment. The artiste also said Orlando Owoh’s unique blend of highlife, Yoruba rhythms and deep vocals helped shape his interest in live band music and rich, traditional instrumentation. According to him, listening to both icons while growing up taught him to value originality, meaningful lyrics and strong band arrangements, which now guide how he writes, records and performs his own songs. He added that his goal is to keep evolving the Afrobeat sound for a new generation while still paying respect to the pioneers whose […]

Canal+ to discontinue Showmax after MultiChoice takeover

French media group Canal+, the new owner of MultiChoice, has announced plans to discontinue the Showmax streaming service after a review of the company’s digital operations. In a statement, MultiChoice said the Showmax board approved the shutdown because the platform’s heavy annual losses had become unsustainable in an increasingly competitive and capital intensive global streaming market. The company explained that, instead of continuing to fund Showmax, it will redirect resources into building a new large scale in house streaming platform aimed at both African and international audiences. Details of the new service and launch date will be announced later. Subscribers were informed about the planned discontinuation by email, with Showmax saying the move is intended to ensure long term sustainability and more efficient investment under the enlarged Canal+ MultiChoice group. MultiChoice and Canal+ stressed that no job losses are expected […]

Seven countries to boycott Paralympics ceremony over Russia

At least seven countries have announced they will boycott the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games in Milan Cortina in protest at the participation of Russian athletes under their national flag. The boycott is led by Ukraine, which says allowing Russia and Belarus to compete with full national symbols while the war in Ukraine continues is “unacceptable” and amounts to recognising a “killer state” at a top sports event. Other countries joining the protest include Poland, Finland, Czechia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, with officials from these nations confirming they will skip the ceremony to show solidarity with Ukraine. The International Paralympic Committee has allocated 10 slots for Russian and Belarusian athletes, who have been cleared to compete under their flags and anthems after earlier bans linked to the invasion of Ukraine. While the boycotting countries still plan to […]

World Cup play off: Super Eagles’ hopes fade as FIFA confirms DRC spot

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup have suffered a final blow after world football body FIFA confirmed DR Congo as Africa’s representative in the inter confederation play off tournament. In a tournament accreditation notice and subsequent communications, FIFA listed DR Congo among the six teams that will compete in the play off, leaving no space for the Super Eagles, who had challenged their defeat to the Congolese side. Nigeria lost to DR Congo in the intercontinental play off final in Rabat, with the match ending 1–1 in regulation time before the Leopards won 4–3 on penalties to claim Africa’s last slot. The Nigeria Football Federation later petitioned FIFA, alleging that some DR Congo players were ineligible and that competition rules had been breached, but FIFA ruled that all the players were properly registered and cleared to play. US House likely to reject move to limit Trump’s Iran war powers

The United States House of Representatives is expected to vote down a bid to limit President Donald Trump’s authority to continue military operations against Iran. The measure mirrors a resolution that failed in the Senate, where most Republicans blocked an attempt to require Trump to obtain explicit congressional approval before extending the campaign in Iran. Republicans, who hold a slim majority in both chambers, argue that the president has sufficient constitutional and statutory authority to act and describe the strikes on Iran as defensive and necessary. Democrats, backed by a few Republicans, insist that Congress must reassert its war powers, warning that the widening conflict with Iran risks dragging the US into a prolonged and open ended war in the Middle East. Analysts say even if the House and Senate were to pass a war powers resolution, Trump would almost […]
