Minority leader calls for end to political retaliation in Ghana

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on Ghana’s two dominant political parties—the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP)—to end the entrenched cycle of political retaliation, warning that it is undermining democratic stability and eroding public trust. Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, May 2, 2025, the Effutu MP described the decades-long practice of political vengeance as a “vicious cycle” that yields no meaningful progress for the nation. “All we have as a country is our democracy,” he said. “Since 1992, we’ve witnessed cycles of retaliation in governance. But I believe the time has come for us to look beyond that and focus on legacies that safeguard our democratic future.” Mr Afenyo-Markin’s remarks come amid concerns over partisan interference in public institutions, including the judiciary and state-owned enterprises. He accused both […]

Traoré’s Footsteps: Ghana Tells Foreign Miners to Leave

In a bold move echoing the policies of Burkina Faso's President Ibrahim Traoré, Ghana has announced a significant shift in its mining sector. Effective May 1, 2025, the Ghanaian government will prohibit foreigners from trading or purchasing artisanally mined gold within the country. This decision marks a pivotal step in Ghana's ongoing battle against illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as "galamsey," and aims to reclaim control over its valuable natural resources. Ghana's New Mining Policy The newly established Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) will replace the previous licensing agency, the Precious Minerals Marketing Co. Under the new law signed by President John Dramani Mahama on April 2, only GoldBod will be authorized to buy, sell, assay, and export gold produced by licensed small-scale miners. Non-compliance with this regulation will result in criminal charges. Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson emphasized […]

Our industry doesn’t respect legends —Sherifa Gunu

GHANAIAN songstress Sherifa Gunu has voiced her concerns regarding the treatment of creatives in the country, particularly older artistes who have made significant contributions to the nation's music scene. She believes these talented individuals often go unrecognised and disrespected despite their substantial input toward Ghana's creative landscape. n a recent conversation with Graphic Showbiz, Sherifa pointed out that while other countries celebrate their cultural icons, Ghana tends to honour her legends often when it is too late. According to her, Ghana mostly acknowledges her legends posthumously or when they achieve acclaim on international platforms thus  emphasised the urgent need for greater appreciation of veteran musicians. To her, this trend, is disappointing and highlights a troubling lack of respect for those who have paved the way for younger artistes. She therefore called for a fundamental shift in how the nation values […]

MahamaCares fund to support specialist care for younger Ghanaians living with chronic diseases

The Minister for Health, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the newly launched Ghana Medical Trust Fund also referred to as the MahamaCares initiative, will prioritise specialist care for Ghanaians aged 18 to 45, the age group most affected by chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Mr Akandoh made the announcement at the launch of the fund in Accra on Tuesday, April 29 2025. He said the initiative marked the implementation of a major health financing promise made by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2024 election campaign. “Available estimates show that NCDs account for approximately 43 per cent of all-cause mortality in Ghana, with a sharp increase recorded between 2012 and 2023,” Mr Akandoh said. “What is even more worrying is that individuals aged between 18 and 45, the most productive segment of our population, now constitute over 50 per […]

GBA Urged to Clarify Stand on Supreme Court Nominations and Judicial Independence in Ghana

Less than a week after calling for the rule of law to prevail, the GBA has reversed course — now urging the President to revoke the suspension of the Chief Justice. It’s good that the GBA has finally found its voice. We would now like to hear that voice on these pressing constitutional matters: Supreme Court Nominations:Does the GBA support the Chief Justice personally selecting and submitting five names for Supreme Court appointment — contrary to Article 144(2) of the Constitution? Nomination Criteria:Will the GBA explain what criteria the Chief Justice used in choosing her five nominees — and whether it meets constitutional standards of merit, transparency, and fairness? Usurpation of the Judicial Council’s Role:Does the GBA condone the Chief Justice bypassing the Judicial Council, the body constitutionally entrusted with recommending nominees to the Supreme Court? Backroom Deals on Judicial […]

Bawumia: NDC Had No Campaign Message, Only Used NPP’s Internal Criticisms in 2024 Elections

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a key figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has sharply criticized the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), claiming that their 2024 election campaign lacked any original or coherent message. According to Dr. Bawumia, the NDC merely amplified internal criticisms and comments made by NPP members, using them as their main political weapon. Speaking during a post-election strategic review session with party members, Dr. Bawumia said: "The NDC had no solid campaign message of their own. They simply took what we said against each other and made it their entire election strategy." He emphasized that instead of articulating a clear policy agenda or vision for the country, the NDC relied on highlighting divisions, grievances, and mistakes within the ruling party. This approach, according to Dr. Bawumia, resonated with a public already disillusioned by economic hardship and governance […]

Dr. Bawumia Attributes 2024 Election Defeat to High Cost of Living and Arrogance of Power

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s Vice President and a leading figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has openly acknowledged that the party's defeat in the 2024 general elections was largely due to the high cost of living and a perception of arrogance among those in power. Addressing party members during a recent internal review meeting, Dr. Bawumia referenced multiple post-election reports and independent assessments that pointed to widespread public dissatisfaction with the government's economic management and attitude. According to him, these two critical factors—soaring living expenses and a disconnection from the ordinary citizen—played decisive roles in shaping voter sentiment. "Every single report we have received, both internal and external, points to the fact that the high cost of living weighed heavily on the electorate," Dr. Bawumia said. "Added to that was the perception that we became arrogant in our governance, […]

Ghana Chief Justice Suspension: Nation Grapples with Separation of Powers

The suspension of the chief justice of the supreme court of Ghana, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, and the investigation ordered by Ghana's president, John Mahama, over allegations of abuse of office is throwing up a big constitutional puzzle and political headache for the west African country. It has provoked deep questions about the balance of power, the independence of the judiciary and the integrity of the country's democratic leadership. The President's Action and Constitutional Grounds Supporters of President Mahama argue three anonymous petitions of corruption and suspected impropriety justify his decision. However, critics argue President Mahama's course of action undermines Article 146 of Ghana's 1992 Constitution. This article explains the procedure to impeach a Chief Justice "on the ground of proven misbehaviour or incapacity" (i.e., for incompetence or for misbehaviour). Here is the constitution, which is a cornerstone of the […]

Passport fee reduction to take effect after Parliamentary approval – Minister

Although the government had announced a 30 per cent cut in the cost of an ordinary passport, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, clarified in a Facebook post that the new fee will only take effect when Parliament reconvenes. The revised fee is part of a broader set of passport reforms scheduled to begin on Monday, April 28, 2025, but the price change remains subject to legislative approval. Mr Ablakwa had earlier informed Parliament on March 13, 2025, that the reduction was in response to public concerns over affordability. He assured that the government remained committed to keeping passport costs reasonable while maintaining robust security standards. Parliament is currently on recess and is expected to resume on a yet-to-be-announced date in May. An amendment to the Fees and Charges Act is anticipated to be presented when the House […]
