Mepe Mourns During 69th Afenortor Festival
The chiefs and people of Mepe in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region observed the 69th Afenortor Festival in 2025 under a somber atmosphere, mourning the recent helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians. In contrast to the festival’s usual display of colorful kente cloths, energetic drumming, and dancing, this year’s celebrations saw participants dressed in red and black to signify grief and solidarity with the bereaved families. The event was marked by solemn traditional rites, the singing of dirges, and moments of silence in memory of the victims. Addressing the durbars, the Mankralo of Mepe, Togbui Kosi Nego VI, described the tragedy as a national wound that has left a lasting mark on the country.
