RTI Commission Flags Staffing, Logistics Gaps at 5th Anniversary

At the launch of its 5th-anniversary celebration in Accra, the Executive Secretary of Ghana’s Right to Information (RTI) Commission, Genevieve Shirley Lartey Esq., raised pressing concerns about the Commission’s limited capacity to effectively fulfill its mandate due to significant staffing and logistical constraints. Despite operating four regional offices—in Accra (head office), Bono, Ashanti, and Upper East—the Commission continues to operate with a small team and scant resources, relying heavily on external partners to sustain its functions. Lartey emphasized the urgent need for additional resources, including logistics and financial support, to ensure continued functionality and efficiency across all offices. Plans are in progress to open additional regional branches in the Northern and Central regions, with another yet-to-be-named region slated before the end of 2025. To guarantee nationwide coverage, areas without an RTI office will be grouped under existing zonal structures. Speaking […]

Assemblies of God Bans Use of Honorary Doctor Titles by Clergy

The Assemblies of God Church in Ghana has formally instructed its clergy to refrain from using honorary doctorate titles—such as “Dr.”—during official or public functions. The directive, issued via a circular dated July 11, 2025, follows a resolution passed by the church’s Executive Presbytery in May 2024. This move aligns with regulations issued by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), which does not recognize honorary doctorates—whether from accredited or unaccredited institutions—as equivalent to earned academic degrees. Under the directive, pastors who hold honorary degrees are explicitly barred from appending “Dr.” to their names. Clergy with earned academic degrees—be it bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D.—must submit their certificates to GTEC for verification before being formally recognized by the church. The Assemblies of God warned that non-compliance with the directive or GTEC’s requirements could lead to disciplinary action, including suspension from office. To […]

The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that printing of ballot papers for the upcoming Akwatia parliamentary by-election will commence on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. This was announced following a security-focused meeting convened by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) with political party representatives to discuss preventive measures against electoral violence and key logistical arrangements. At the post-meeting briefing, EC’s Director of Electoral Services, Benjamin Bano-Bioh, stated: “As of now, we are going to start the printing of ballots from tomorrow... Procurement has already been done. We have procured all the materials required for the election.” The by-election has been necessitated by the passing of Akwatia’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, who represented the constituency under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) until his death in July 2025, creating a vacancy in Parliament. During the same meeting, the IGP assured political actors […]

However, a trusted source confirmed his name did not […]

Ghana’s Controller and Accountant-General, Mr. Kwasi Agyei, has confirmed that the government has fully paid GH¢809 million to the contractor handling the Pokuase–Nsawam Highway project—Maripoma Enterprise Limited—allowing work to resume on this critical stretch. SEC Warns of Rising AI Fraud and Impersonation in Ghana

In a revealing move, Acting Deputy Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Mr. Mensah Thompson, has raised urgent concerns about the growing misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in fraudulent schemes and impersonation across the country. His warning underscores the evolving challenges Ghana’s financial regulators face in safeguarding investors amid the rise of digitally enabled fraud. AI-Driven Fraud: A New Frontier Last month, the SEC issued a public alert drawing attention to a disturbing trend: fraudulent investment platforms are increasingly deploying AI to impersonate trusted public figures. These ploys often feature manipulated images and voice recordings to deceive unsuspecting investors, giving scammers a veneer of credibility. The fabricated endorsements tap into social media platforms, complicating efforts to trace perpetrators. Mr. Mensah Thompson echoed this urgency, emphasizing that such advancements in AI technology are quickly being weaponized. “AI-generated content can […]

Ghana Nurses Midwives Protest Over 8-Month Unpaid Salaries

A coalition of more than 7,000 nurses and midwives working in public health facilities across Ghana has staged a protest to demand the immediate release of eight months’ worth of unpaid salaries. The group, known as the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives, says they have not received any pay since January 2025, leaving many in severe financial distress. Despite being granted financial clearance by government—a process meant to authorize their salaries—no payments have been made to date. During the protest, the convener of the coalition, Stephen Kwadwo Takyiah, expressed the deep frustration and emotional toll the situation has caused. “We are emotionally drained from working with no assurances of payment anytime soon,” he lamented, describing the toll on both morale and daily survival. The health professionals argue that the salary delays have forced them into what they call an […]

Ramseyer Credit Union Marks 25 Years, Urges Stronger Regulations

The Ramseyer Cooperative Credit Union has celebrated its 25th anniversary with a strong appeal to government to strengthen financial regulations to safeguard the operations of credit unions across Ghana. Speaking at the milestone event in Kumasi, Chief Executive Officer Kennedy Yeboah highlighted the crucial role of credit unions in expanding financial inclusion, especially for low- and middle-income earners who often lack access to mainstream banking services. Mr. Yeboah stressed that despite remarkable progress in the cooperative sector over the past decades, weak regulatory frameworks and emerging risks in the financial landscape continue to pose challenges. “Government must look at the legislation that requires credit unions to be efficient, so that the unions can work hand in hand with government to achieve the results we want,” he urged. He emphasized that stronger financial oversight would not only protect members’ hard-earned savings […]

Assembly Members Decry Poor Quality of Government-Provided Motorbikes in Asunafo North

Assembly members in the Asunafo North Municipality of the Ahafo Region have expressed dissatisfaction with the poor quality of motorbikes provided to them by the government for official duties. Speaking to Adom News in Goaso, Samuel Antoh, the Assembly Member for the Akrodie Manhyia Electoral Area, lamented that the motorbikes supplied over the years have weak bodies, frequently break down, and fail to meet the demands of their work. Mr. Antoh further revealed that the government pays significantly more for each motorbike than the prevailing market price, raising questions about procurement practices and value for money. He urged the government to consider providing funds directly to assembly members to purchase their own motorbikes or, alternatively, ensure that suppliers deliver stronger and more durable vehicles that can withstand regular use. According to the assembly members, improved mobility is crucial to effectively […]
