Former Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, K.T. Hammond, has cautioned that Ghanaians may face severe hardship if former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is not elected President in the 2028 elections. Addressing supporters during Dr. Bawumia’s campaign tour in the Ashanti Region on September 10, Hammond expressed firm confidence in the former vice president’s leadership qualities, stressing that he has the competence and ability to manage the affairs of the country if given the mandate. He dismissed criticisms directed at Dr. Bawumia, particularly those questioning his faith, describing claims that he cannot be President because he is a Muslim as sheer madness. Hammond argued that Ghana’s future should not be determined by religious bias but by the competence and dedication of its leaders. “Have you monitored Bawumia’s capabilities and hard work? It’s madness to say Bawumia is a Muslim, […]

Accra Warehouse Fire Still Burning Strong

A massive fire that broke out at a Chinese warehouse in Lartebiokorshie, Accra, is still burning days after it started on Tuesday, September 9, according to the Ghana National Fire Service. The blaze, which began around 4:00 p.m., has been difficult to control because the warehouse contained highly flammable goods including rubber slippers, leather bags, and other synthetic items. DO2 Desmond Ackah, Head of Public Relations for the Service, explained that the stored materials reignite even after being doused, making the fire unusually stubborn. While early reports suggested possible fatalities, officials have confirmed that no deaths have been recorded. However, two firefighters and one civilian sustained injuries and are receiving treatment. Emergency teams have deployed heavy equipment, including excavators, to dig through debris and reach unburnt items buried inside the warehouse that continue to fuel the flames. Ackah stressed that […]

Ghana Could Import Water if Galamsey Continues, Says Nana Yaa Jantuah

esidential Staffer and Head of the Utility Review Hearing Committee, Nana Yaa Jantuah, has warned that Ghana could face the possibility of importing water in the future if illegal mining, widely known as galamsey, is not curbed. Speaking at a public hearing on utility tariff proposals in Accra, she cautioned that unregulated galamsey activities are heavily polluting the nation’s rivers and lakes, threatening water security for both domestic and industrial use. “We have an issue at hand, and everybody knows what it is, and that is galamsey. Because of galamsey, the Ghana Water Company faces major challenges in treating water for public use. If the situation is not checked, Ghana could soon become water-poor,” she said. Jantuah further explained that such a development would drive up costs for households and businesses, disproportionately affecting the poor. “Water poverty means Ghana might […]

Ghana Scholarships Secretariat Probed Over Alleged Misuse of Funds for Spouses and Dependents

The Registrar of the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, has raised serious concerns about questionable practices in the administration of scholarship funds during the tenure of his predecessor, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang. Speaking in an interview on Nhyira FM’s Kuro Yi Mu Nsem, Mr. Asafo-Agyei alleged that, beyond covering tuition and living expenses for students abroad, the Secretariat also extended full financial support to the spouses and children of some beneficiaries—a move he described as highly problematic. “What happened at the Secretariat was that when a student was awarded a scholarship, their wife and children were also added as dependents,” he explained. “The Secretariat paid for their visa processes, air tickets, and even allocated stipends. There are memos with official approval confirming these payments.” He cited a specific case involving Mr. Peter Mensah, who received a scholarship in January 2022 […]
