Tanker and cargo vessel collide off UK coast, coastguard says

Britain’s coastguard has launched an emergency response after a collision between an oil tanker and cargo vessel in the North Sea, off England’s northeastern coast. The UK coastguard said it has sent a helicopter and lifeboats from nearby towns, as well as “vessels with fire-fighting capability,” to respond to the incident. “A coastguard rescue helicopter from Humberside was called, alongside lifeboats from Skegness, Bridlington, Maplethorpe [sic] and Cleethorpes, an HM Coastguard fixed-wing aircraft, and nearby vessels with firefighting capability,” it said. The incident is believed to involve a US-flagged tanker called the Stena Immaculate, which was at anchor off the coast near the city of Hull, and a container ship called the Solong -which is sailing under the flag of Madeira, an autonomous region of Portugal - according to the ship tracking tool VesselFinder. A flurry of high-speed ships and […]

Plan to Return Russian Diplomats to U.S. Poses Espionage Risk

As it moves to transform U.S. relations with Russia, the Trump administration is talking with Moscow about readmitting potentially scores of Russian diplomats into the United States after years of expulsions. But the good-will gesture, which would be reciprocated by Moscow, could be a kind of Trojan horse, experts and diplomats warn, as the Kremlin is likely to dispatch spies posing as diplomats to restore its diminished espionage capabilities within the United States. U.S. and Russian officials met in Istanbul last month to discuss returning more diplomats to each other’s countries after years of tit-for-tat expulsions and the shuttering of diplomatic facilities. The midlevel talks, part of a rapid rapprochement between the Kremlin and the White House under President Trump, took place at the U.S. consul’s residence. Days earlier in Riyadh, a U.S. delegation headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio […]

Florida opens criminal investigation into Tate brothers

Florida has launched a criminal investigation into British-American influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate, who flew to the state last week from Romania, where they faced rape and human-trafficking charges. Florida's attorney general, James Uthmeier, said investigators have issued search warrants and subpoenas as part of a "now-active" inquiry. In the US, the brothers also face a civil suit from a woman alleging they coerced her into sex work, and then defamed her after she gave evidence to Romanian authorities. They strongly deny all the allegations against them. A former kickboxer and self-described misogynist who appeared on UK TV show Big Brother, Andrew Tate has millions of followers online. Andrew, 38, and his brother Tristan, 36, face separate charges in the UK of rape and human trafficking. They deny those allegations too. Uthmeier, a Republican, said in Tuesday's statement: "Last week, […]

Trump says he is ‘just getting started’ in speech to US Congress

Six weeks into his presidency, Donald Trump came to a US Capitol controlled by his Republican Party to take a lengthy victory lap. "We have accomplished more in 43 days than most administrations accomplished in four years or eight years, and we are just getting started," he told the joint session of Congress. In typical Trumpian hyperbole, he said that "many" believed his to be the most successful start to a presidency in US history. He noted what he said was a change in the national mood toward "pride" and "confidence". He compared himself to George Washington, and boasted about the size of his electoral victory. The whirlwind start to his presidency offered plenty of material for Trump to cover, and he didn't shy away from it. He ticked through a lengthy list of tangible accomplishments – hundreds of executive […]

US actor Jesse Eisenberg gets Polish citizenship

Eisenberg wrote, directed and starred in the film, about two American cousins who travel to Poland to honour their grandmother, a Holocaust survivor, who was based on Eisenberg's own great aunt. He told the citizenship ceremony: "While we were filming this movie in Poland, and I was walking the streets and starting to get a little more comfortable in the country, something so obvious occurred to me, which is that my family had lived in this place for far longer than we lived in New York. "And of course, the history ended so tragically." He continued: "In addition to that tragedy of history is also the tragedy that my family didn't feel any connection any more to Poland, and that saddened me and confirmed for me that I really wanted to try to reconnect as much as possible. "And I […]

Arab leaders approve $53bn alternative to Trump’s Gaza plan

"The Egypt plan is now an Arab plan," announced the secretary general of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit at the end of this hours-long gathering. Without referring specifically to President Trump's ideas, he underlined that "the Arab stance is to reject any displacement, whether it is voluntary or forced". Egypt had produced a detailed blueprint, with a 91-page glossy document including images of leafy neighbourhoods and grand public buildings, to counter a US scheme labelled as a "Middle East Riviera" which shocked the Arab world and beyond. What sets this new plan apart is it is not just about property development; its banners are politics and the rights of Palestinians. In his opening remarks, Egypt's President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi also called for a parallel plan alongside the physical reconstruction to move towards what is known as the two state […]

Hong Kong billionaire to sell Panama Canal ports to US firm

A Hong Kong-based company has agreed to sell most of its stake in two key ports on the Panama Canal to a group led by US investment firm BlackRock. The sale comes after weeks of complaining by President Donald Trump that the canal is under Chinese control and that the US should take control of the major shipping route. Through a subsidiary, CK Hutchison Holding operates ports at the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean entrances to the canal. It said Tuesday that it would sell its interests as part of a deal worth $22.8bn (£17.8bn). CK Hutchison, founded by Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing, is not owned by the Chinese government. But its base in Hong Kong means it operates under Chinese financial laws. It has operated the ports since 1997. The deal includes a total of 43 ports in 23 […]

At the end of talks in London, Zelenskyy said he was ready to sign a minerals deal with the US, but maintained that he would not concede any territory to Russia as part of a peace deal. European leaders are to draft up a plan to end the fighting in Ukraine, according to Starmer. That plan would then be presented to US President Donald Trump. This blog has now closed. Macron suggests Ukraine truce could be weeks away

French President Emmanuel Macron has said a truce between Ukraine and Russia could be agreed in the coming weeks. He was speaking to Fox News in Washington following talks with Donald Trump at the White House on the third anniversary of Russia's invasion. The US president, who suggested the war could end "within weeks", insisted Europe should shoulder the cost and burden of any peacekeeping deal for Ukraine. Macron said any peace deal in Ukraine must "not be a surrender of Ukraine" and must be backed by security guarantees. The arrival of Trump for a second term at the White House was a "game changer", the French leader said. He said he believed it was "feasible" to talk about a truce in the war and the start of negotiations for a sustainable peace within weeks. Macron said he had spoken […]
