Google to Pay $36m Fine in Australia Over Android Search Deals

Google has agreed to pay a US$36 million fine after admitting to anti-competitive agreements with two major Australian telecom firms, Telstra and Optus. Australia’s Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said the deals, in place between December 2019 and March 2021, required the telecom companies to pre-install only Google’s search engine on Android devices. In return, both firms received a share of Google’s advertising revenue. The ACCC described the arrangements as harmful to competition, noting they reduced consumer choice and potentially led to higher costs and poorer service. “Conduct that restricts competition is illegal in Australia,” said ACCC chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb. Google, which cooperated with the investigation, admitted the agreements were likely to have substantially lessened competition. The company said it was satisfied to have resolved the matter and stressed that such provisions were no longer part of its contracts. Both […]

Historic 300-Year-Old Paganini Violin to Feature at BBC Proms

A rare 300-year-old violin, once owned by legendary Italian composer Niccolò Paganini, will take center stage at the BBC Proms in London later this month. The violin, known as the Carrodus, was crafted in 1743 by master Italian maker Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù in Cremona, northern Italy. Valued at $20 million, it is one of only about 150 of his instruments still in existence. The instrument, loaned to South Korean violinist Inmo Yang by the Stretton Society—a philanthropic group that acquires rare instruments for top musicians—will be played publicly for the first time at the Royal Albert Hall on August 28. “I can’t believe how lucky I am to have this instrument. It’s one of the greatest violins ever made,” Yang told AFP, expressing his sense of duty to preserve its legacy by keeping it in use rather than locked […]

European Leaders Demand Ceasefire First During the multilateral meeting, Merz made a forceful statement, asserting: “A ceasefire must form the basis of peace negotiations.”He emphasized that meaningful discussions with Russia cannot proceed unless hostilities first halt, warning that credibility hinges on it. Meanwhile, Macron underscored the broader security implications, noting that any peace agreement must ensure the safety not just of Ukraine—but of the entire European continent. A Divergence from Trump’s Strategic Shift President Trump, by contrast, signaled openness to peace negotiations […]

Hamas Accepts Gaza Ceasefire Plan Amid Hostage Deal Talks

In a significant development in the ongoing Gaza conflict, Hamas has agreed to the latest ceasefire and hostage release proposal put forward by regional mediators Egypt and Qatar. The deal, based on a framework crafted by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, could mark the most serious step toward de-escalation in months of stalled negotiations. The Two-Stage Proposal According to a Palestinian official involved in the talks, the plan is structured as a two-stage agreement. Hamas would release roughly half of the 50 remaining Israeli hostages, believed to include around 20 still alive, over the course of a 60-day truce. During this period, negotiators would work toward securing a permanent ceasefire and paving the way for a gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. While Hamas has publicly signaled approval of the plan, Israeli officials have not yet commented. Israeli Public Pressure […]

Death Toll from Russian Gunpowder Factory Blast Climbs to 20

The number of people killed in Friday’s explosion at a gunpowder factory near Moscow has risen to 20, with more than 130 others injured, local authorities confirmed on Monday. The blast occurred at the Elastik gunpowder and ammunition plant in Ryazan, about 200 kilometres southeast of Moscow. Initial reports had put the death toll at 11. Officials declared Monday a day of mourning in the region. According to local sources, the explosion may have been triggered by a rogue shell detonation. Independent outlets reported that the factory had previously been warned over repeated safety violations. Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case for possible breaches of industrial safety regulations, suggesting the incident was not linked to Ukrainian sabotage. Photos released by the emergency ministry showed parts of the plant reduced to rubble. Search and rescue operations were still underway […]

Iraq Uncovers Mass Grave of IS Victims Near Mosul

Iraqi authorities have begun excavating a mass grave believed to contain thousands of victims of the Islamic State (IS) near Mosul, officials confirmed on Sunday. The operation, launched on August 10, focuses on the Khasfa site, where surface-level digging has already unearthed human skulls, according to project director Ahmed al-Assadi. Located outside Mosul—the former capital of IS’s self-declared “caliphate”—Khasfa is thought to be Iraq’s largest mass grave. A 2018 UN report estimated it could hold at least 4,000 bodies, with thousands more possibly buried in the 150-metre-deep sinkhole. Assadi said victims include Iraqi soldiers executed by IS, members of the Yazidi minority, and Mosul residents killed during the jihadists’ rule. In one of the worst massacres, IS executed 280 people in a single day in 2016, many of them Interior Ministry employees. Water erosion has damaged many of the remains, […]
