Scrap National Placement Centre – GNACOPS Director

Executive Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS), Obengfo Nana Kwasi Gyetuah, has called for the scrapping of the National Placement Resolution Centre, arguing that it undermines the work of regional and district education offices tasked with resolving Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) issues. The Ghana Education Service (GES) established Placement Resolution Centres across districts and regions to assist students, parents, and guardians facing challenges with Senior High School (SHS) placements. However, Mr. Gyetuah contends that the national centre continues to overshadow these local offices, resulting in unnecessary congestion whenever placements are released. His comments follow chaotic scenes at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Hall in Accra on Tuesday, September 23, where hundreds of parents and students gathered to address placement difficulties. Speaking on Channel One TV on Saturday, September 27, he argued […]

Ghana miners launch taskforce to fight illegal mining

The National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association, Ghana (NCSSMAG), has inaugurated an Anti-Galamsey Taskforce to intensify the fight against illegal mining on rivers and streams nationwide. The taskforce is mandated to monitor members’ operations, enforce compliance, and promote responsible mining practices. It will also conduct peer reviews to ensure accountability and adherence to industry standards. To enhance operations, NCSSMAG has deployed taskforces across major mining areas and procured a mini speedboat to patrol water bodies. The initiative supports the government’s Blue Water Guards program under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, which aims to safeguard Ghana’s rivers from destructive mining practices. At the launch, NCSSMAG President Michael Kwadwo Peprah issued a strong warning to illegal miners. “Our message is clear: all illegal mining operations on water bodies must cease immediately. The taskforce will not compromise in protecting our rivers for […]

Parliamentary Committee Visits Gnani and Kukuo Camps, Pledges Support for Witchcraft Victims

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Human Rights, in collaboration with several civil society organisations (CSOs), has visited the Gnani Camp in the Northern Region to assess living conditions and document the situation of residents. The visit formed part of a three-day fact-finding mission to alleged witches’ camps, ahead of the passage of the Criminal Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2025, also known as the Anti-Witchcraft Accusations Bill. Alhassan, leader of the Gnani Camp, briefed the delegation on challenges faced by residents, citing stigma, limited resources, and lack of access to education and healthcare as the most pressing concerns. He explained that the camp provides refuge for individuals accused of witchcraft who face rejection and threats in their home communities. The Committee later visited the Kukuo Camp, where they met residents and paid homage to the local chief as part of cultural protocol. […]

Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings Demands Action on CMB-Abuja Market Land Dispute

The Member of Parliament for Klottey-Korle, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has urged immediate and coordinated government action to resolve the long-standing dispute over the CMB-Abuja market land, also known as the Railways land. Despite being government property, the land has been the subject of private claims for more than eight years, with repeated attempts to evict over 3,000 people who live and work there, including GPRTU drivers, market women, and traders. At a press conference, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings stressed that the issue extends beyond land ownership, framing it as a matter of livelihoods, community survival, and national food security. “The CMB Abuja Market is a vital hub where thousands of Ghanaians shop daily for affordable food and where traders, drivers, and families earn their living. Any disruption here will not only devastate livelihoods but also undermine food security and economic stability far […]

The Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, has assured that the government is actively working to resolve the indefinite strike declared by the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trade Union Congress (TUC). Speaking on JoyNews, Dr. Pelpuo explained that the government has taken note of TEWU’s grievances and is pursuing a broader solution that addresses not only their concerns but also those of other unions considering strike action. “The Ministry of Finance is leading the effort to find a solution, and the government is hopeful that a mutually beneficial agreement can be reached,” he stated. Dr. Pelpuo emphasized that addressing demands individually could create further complications within Ghana’s labour force, hence the decision to adopt a comprehensive approach. He confirmed that engagements with TEWU leadership are underway to explore possible resolutions. TEWU-TUC declared the […]

GTEC orders UCC Vice-Chancellor to step aside

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), to step aside for exceeding the mandatory retirement age. In a statement issued on September 19, 2025, GTEC announced the appointment of Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto as acting Vice-Chancellor. The Commission explained that Prof. Boampong, who remains in office despite being over 60, is in violation of Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution. “Article 199(1) states that a public officer shall, except as otherwise provided in this Constitution, retire from the public service on attaining the age of sixty years,” GTEC noted. It added that the Vice-Chancellor’s role is considered part of the public service under the University of Cape Coast Act, 1992 (PNDCL 278), and must therefore comply with the retirement provision. The Commission also referenced Statute 8.2 of […]

Kantamanto Market boss denies leadership confusion

Kantamanto Market Coordinator Kakari Mensah has rejected claims of leadership confusion, stressing that the market functions under established rules and recognized leadership structures. During an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem while visiting the market, Mensah clarified that no executives had secretly elected a new chairman, countering recent rumors. “The Kantamanto Market has leaders, and we have rules and regulations governing us. It is not true that some executives have colluded to elect a chairman. The market leaders are in charge of traders’ affairs,” he said. Mensah further explained that a disciplinary committee is in place to manage disputes and ensure order without violence. “If you flout the law, there is a disciplinary committee to handle the issue. We don’t fight in this market, and we don’t invoke curses,” he stressed. He assured both traders and the public that the […]

Gold Board CEO denies galamsey claims, backs anti-mining fight

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has dismissed suggestions that the newly established body is promoting illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. “Let me clear some misconceptions that GoldBod is promoting galamsey. And my simple question to them is: how can a five-month-old statutory corporation be responsible for an age-long problem?” he said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, during a discussion on the government’s fight against illegal mining. Mr. Gyamfi emphasized that galamsey existed long before GoldBod and had already reached alarming levels before the institution was set up. “Last year there was no GoldBod, but we saw widespread protests against galamsey because the problem had reached unprecedented levels. So how can you say that a corporation established barely five months ago is to blame?” he asked. He clarified that GoldBod’s legal mandate is […]

Gold Board CEO denies buying galamsey gold, pushes reforms

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has rejected claims that the newly established institution is encouraging illegal mining by purchasing galamsey gold. “To create the impression that nobody was buying galamsey gold and all of a sudden GoldBod is now giving it a market is clearly wrong,” he said on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show during a discussion on the government’s fight against illegal mining. Mr. Gyamfi explained that GoldBod does not buy gold directly. Instead, licensed private buyers—based mainly in district and regional capitals—purchase gold brought to them. These buyers, he noted, have no technology to verify whether the gold was mined legally or illegally, a challenge that has existed since colonial times. “It is this five-month-old corporation called Gold Board that has now been given the mandate to find a solution to that […]
