The former General Manager of Akonta Mining Company Limited, Edward Akwasi Akuoko, has publicly admitted that the company did not complete all required documentation before commencing operations in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve. In an exclusive interview on Adom TV’s Badwam program, Mr. Akuoko revealed that this fact will form part of his testimony as a prosecution witness in the ongoing Akonta Mining trial. He added that Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi and owner of Akonta Mining, acknowledged this lapse during court proceedings. The revelation comes after the Office of the Attorney-General formally withdrew all charges against Mr. Akuoko — making him the fourth accused person discharged in the high-profile case involving Akonta Mining and its officials. Ghana’s PAC urges EPA to shut down petrol and gas stations in residential areas over safety concerns

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Ghana’s Parliament has called on the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to take decisive action against individuals and companies operating petrol and gas stations within residential communities. The Committee warned that these practices pose severe safety hazards and could have catastrophic consequences in the event of a fire or explosion. During a recent committee session, Acting Chair Samuel Atta Mills described the situation as both “alarming and unacceptable,” urging the EPA to strengthen enforcement and protect lives and property. “The dangers in siting petrol and gas stations within residential communities are real and deadly in times of emergencies. Such actions must not be entertained,” Atta Mills stated. He further called on the EPA to tighten its licensing procedures, noting that some operators exploit loopholes and allegedly […]

Ghana Farmers Announce Nationwide Boycott of 2025 Farmers’ Day Over Neglect and Policy Failures

A coalition of Ghana’s leading agricultural organisations has declared a nationwide boycott of the 2025 Farmers’ Day celebrations, accusing the government of neglect and mismanagement that have worsened the country’s food production crisis. The coalition — comprising rice and maize producers, millers, input suppliers, mechanisation service providers, and agribusiness groups — described the move as “a united stand for survival.” It marks the first time in Ghana’s history that such a broad alliance of farmers has collectively boycotted the national celebration. In a joint statement, the groups expressed frustration over the government’s failure to fulfil its September 2025 promise that the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) would buy all locally produced rice and maize. Farmers say no such purchases have occurred, leaving thousands of tonnes of grain unsold and many producers in debt. The statement also accused the government […]

Military Police Rescue Six Security Officers Detained Over Chieftaincy Dispute in Awutu

The Military Police have rescued four soldiers and two National Security operatives who were detained at the Bawjiase District Police Command and later transported to Accra for further interrogation. According to reports by Adom News, the officers were apprehended after allegedly attempting to install a new chief at Awutu Kwashie Abbey in the Awutu Senya West District — a community that already has a gazetted chief, Nai Kwashie Abbey VIII, popularly known as Nai Atopi. Awutu Kwashie Abbey, largely a farming community, has been the center of a prolonged chieftaincy dispute that has fueled division and tension among residents. The conflict intensified on Thursday night when a group of angry Asafo members from Kasoa Ofaakor stormed the Bawjiase District Police Command, demanding the immediate release of the detained military and security officers. Eyewitnesses say the agitated youth confronted police officers, […]

NSMQ Quarter-Final Postponed After Crowd Surge at Cape Coast Venue

Organisers of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), Primetime Limited, have postponed the third quarter-final contest in Cape Coast after a massive crowd surge disrupted proceedings and created serious safety risks. The contest, scheduled for Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the University of Cape Coast’s School of Graduate Studies Auditorium, was to feature three powerhouse schools — Prempeh College, Adisadel College, and Mfantsipim School. However, the event was brought to an abrupt halt when an overwhelming number of supporters forced their way into the auditorium, breaching security and overcrowding the venue. In an official statement, Primetime said that despite detailed planning and strong crowd-control measures, the situation became untenable, leaving organisers with no option but to call off the contest. “Calling off the contest was the safest decision, as we wished to prevent possible clashes among supporters, especially after […]

Okoe Boye Defends $100m LHIMS Payments, Says Work Justified All Disbursements

Former Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye has defended payments made under the $100 million Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS) project, insisting that all funds disbursed during his tenure were based on verified work completed. His response follows allegations by current Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, who claimed the contract was marred by irregularities and had been referred to the Attorney-General for review and possible prosecution. According to Akandoh, the vendor received over $77 million despite completing less than half of the installations under the nationwide health digitization project. Dr. Okoe Boye rejected that claim, explaining that all payments made under the previous administration corresponded with project progress at the time. “The total project is worth 100 million dollars. They have not been paid more than that. At the time we exited, our reconciliation with the vendor showed that […]

Mahama Warns Unregulated AI Threatens Global Information Integrity

President John Dramani Mahama has warned that the rapid and unregulated expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) poses a serious threat to global information integrity, cautioning that it could fuel misinformation and distort public discourse if left unchecked. Speaking at the International Conference on Information Integrity in Paris, Mahama said AI-powered tools such as deepfakes and algorithmic manipulation are reshaping how people perceive truth, making it increasingly difficult to separate fact from fiction. “If we’re to build a sustainable planet, we must also build an informed public,” he said. “The dawn of artificial intelligence has transformed the information landscape. While AI offers immense opportunities for innovation, it also amplifies the risk of misinformation and economic disruption.” The Ghanaian leader emphasized the need for collective global action to ensure that technology serves humanity rather than undermines it. “Deepfakes, synthetic media, and algorithmic […]
