Ukrainian forces have targeted what they describe as one of Russia’s key military production sites, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The strike reportedly hit a factory responsible for manufacturing electronic components used in Russian missiles.
Speaking about the operation, Zelensky said the facility played an important role in producing parts for missiles that have been used in attacks against Ukrainian cities and civilian areas. Ukraine’s military indicated that the strike involved the use of Storm Shadow missiles supplied by the United Kingdom.
The target of the strike was the Kremniy El plant, located in the Russian border region of Bryansk region. Local Russian authorities reported that the missile attack resulted in the deaths of at least six civilians and left 42 others injured.
The Kremlin quickly reacted to the incident. A spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Peskov, claimed that the missiles could not have been launched without the direct involvement of British specialists. He described the attack as evidence of Western participation in the conflict.
Peskov reiterated Moscow’s position that the ongoing military campaign—referred to by Russia as a “special military operation”—was launched to prevent what it views as aggressive actions by the Ukrainian government. The invasion of Ukraine began on 24 February 2022 after orders from President Putin.
One of the central goals of Russia’s military campaign, according to the Kremlin, is the demilitarisation of Ukraine. However, since the start of the war, Kyiv has received extensive military assistance from Western allies, including advanced weapon systems intended to help defend its territory.
Russia has also benefited from external support. Among the assistance cited are Shahed drones supplied by Iran, as well as troops reportedly deployed by North Korea.
Ukrainian officials said one of these drones was used in a strike on the city of Kharkiv on Wednesday, killing two people and injuring five others. In a separate attack a day earlier, Russian strikes on Slovyansk in eastern Ukraine reportedly killed four people and wounded sixteen.
Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, fighting between the two sides continues. The conflict has recently shown signs of reaching a stalemate. While Russian forces have made gradual territorial advances in some areas, Ukrainian officials say their troops are also reclaiming land previously occupied by Russian forces.
President Zelensky indicated that a new round of negotiations involving Russian and American representatives could take place next week. The diplomatic process is being facilitated by Donald Trump, who has been attempting to broker an end to the conflict.
A key part of the proposed discussions concerns the future of the Donbas region, which includes the administrative territories of Donetsk and Luhansk. Russia currently controls more than 80 percent of these areas.
Ukraine has repeatedly stated that it cannot agree to relinquish these territories, making the issue one of the most difficult obstacles in the ongoing peace negotiations.
