2027: Obi–Kwankwaso Bid Faces Northern Resistance

Moves to float a joint 2027 presidential ticket featuring Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso are already running into stiff resistance from key northern stakeholders. While support groups have been promoting an Obi–Kwankwaso alliance under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or a new platform, many northern leaders say they remain unconvinced about the project and its chances. Northern elders and youth groups argue that Obi still suffers a trust deficit in parts of the region, with some politicians repeatedly linking him to alleged sympathy for the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) – a charge his camp has consistently denied. They also insist that his 2023 performance in core northern states shows he has a lot of ground to cover despite strong youth enthusiasm and social media visibility. 2027: Odds favour Obi, Kwankwaso as NDC zones presidency to South

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria and the vice‑presidential slot to the North, a move widely seen as boosting the chances of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso emerging as the party’s leading ticket. Delegates at the party’s maiden national convention in Abuja adopted a resolution restricting the presidential ticket to the South for a single four year term, after which power would rotate to the North in 2031. The zoning motion, moved by Afam Victor Ogene, member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, was unanimously endorsed by delegates. Party leaders said the arrangement was designed to promote fairness, balance and internal stability while addressing long running agitations over power rotation between regions. Former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso publicly backed the decision, telling delegates that zoning the […]

PDP Chieftain Rejects Zoning, Calls for Merit in 2027

Former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has opposed the party’s zoning plan for the 2027 presidential ticket, arguing that competence should take priority over regional rotation. Speaking on Arise Television’s The Morning Show on Thursday, Olawepo-Hashim said zoning encourages division instead of unity, stressing that leadership ability is not tied to any part of the country. “Let’s focus on what unites us, not what divides us. Nigeria does not need zoning to produce a competent president. A capable leader can come from anywhere,” he stated. He cited historical examples, noting that former President Olusegun Obasanjo won the PDP ticket in 1999 through an open contest, unlike former President Goodluck Jonathan, who benefited from zoning but later lost re-election. According to Olawepo-Hashim, insisting on zoning could weaken the PDP against the ruling All Progressives Congress […]
