From Ojuelegba streets to world stages: Wizkid’s rise to global stardom

Wizkid’s journey from the streets of Ojuelegba in Surulere, Lagos, to global music superstardom is a story of raw talent, persistence and perfect timing. Born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun in 1990, he started singing in church and recording in small Lagos studios as a teenager, dreaming of breaking out of his modest background. His big break came after he signed with EME Records and released Holla At Your Boy in 2010, a hit that made him a youth favourite and earned him the Next Rated award at the Headies. Over the next few years, he built a strong fan base with back to back singles and tours across Nigeria and the diaspora, setting himself up for a defining moment in his career. That moment was Ojuelegba, the reflective anthem inspired by his hustle in Surulere, which connected deeply with Nigerians at […]

2Baba: Burna Boy ahead of Wizkid, Davido locally and globally

Nigerian music legend 2Baba has hailed Burna Boy as the leading Afrobeats star of the moment, saying he currently operates on a different level from peers like Wizkid and Davido. Speaking on the ‘Mic On’ podcast, 2Baba said he enjoys music from all three but, if forced to choose, he sees Burna Boy as “on the top of the game right now.” He likened judging artists to comparing painters with different styles and stressed that such rankings are ultimately a matter of taste. He explained that his view is based on his understanding of the global music landscape rather than the artists’ personal wealth or private achievements, which he said he cannot measure. According to him, Burna Boy currently tops the chain not just in Nigeria but across Africa and even on the world stage. 2Baba added that there is […]

2Baba calls Wizkid and Fela comparisons ridiculous

Music icon Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has dismissed the ongoing comparison between Wizkid and late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti as ridiculous. In a teaser from an upcoming episode of the Mic On podcast, 2Baba said it is disrespectful to Fela’s legacy and unfair to Wizkid to place both men side by side. He noted that each artiste should be judged within the context of his own era, style and impact. The debate intensified after Wizkid responded to criticism from Seun Kuti, Fela’s son, by claiming he is “bigger” than the Afrobeat pioneer. 2Baba stressed that Fela and Wizkid have made unique contributions to Nigerian music that cannot be measured on the same scale. He argued that constant comparisons ignore the different environments in which they created their work and add nothing useful to the conversation. He urged […]

Stay true to Fela Kuti’s legacy, Yomi Fabiyi tells Wizkid

He acknowledged Wizkid’s long‑standing celebration of Fela’s legacy, citing his appearances at Felabration and his positive remarks about the Afrobeat pioneer. Fabiyi reminded Wizkid that he represents a historic revolution in Nigerian and Afrobeat music, and encouraged him to “manage this storm very well” rather than react in a way that could be seen as turning his back on Fela. Music is about impact, not numbers – Jaywon

Afrobeats singer Jaywon has told young artists that the true value of music lies in its impact, not in streaming figures, charts or social media hype. He spoke in an Instagram post while reacting to recent online drama involving Seun Kuti and Wizkid. Jaywon lamented that many up‑and‑coming acts now equate success purely with numbers, PR and money to push their songs. He warned that believing high streams automatically make someone “the best artist in the world” shows a shallow understanding of what music really is. According to him, music should change minds and touch souls, leaving a legacy that outlives trends and online clout. He pointed to legends like Bob Marley and Fela Anikulapo‑Kuti as examples of artists whose songs remain timeless because of their message and impact, not just commercial success. Jaywon urged young creatives to focus on […]
