One-Third of Europe’s Doctors, Nurses Have Depression – WHO

A new World Health Organization (WHO) report reveals a mental health crisis among healthcare workers in Europe, with one in three doctors and nurses suffering from depression or anxiety. This rate is five times higher than in the general population. The study also found that more than one in ten health workers have had suicidal thoughts. Key factors driving this crisis include workplace violence, consistently long hours, and night shifts. The report highlighted that nurses and female doctors are more likely to experience depression, while male doctors show a higher tendency toward alcohol addiction. Countries like Latvia and Poland reported the highest depression levels, while Denmark and Iceland had the lowest. The WHO is calling for urgent measures, including zero tolerance for violence and reduced working hours, to address the crisis and prevent a looming shortage of nearly one million […]

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has launched a major integrated vaccine campaign in Abuja, targeting children from newborns up to 14 years old. The campaign combines multiple health interventions into a single effort. It includes routine immunizations, measles-rubella vaccines, polio drops, HPV vaccines for nine-year-old girls, and treatments for malaria and neglected tropical diseases. Dr. Muyi Aina, the NPHCDA CEO, stated that this integrated approach will help reach more children, reduce missed vaccinations, and significantly improve child health outcomes across the country. All services provided are free of charge. The first phase of the campaign is running from October 6th to 15th in 19 northern states and Oyo State. A second phase will cover the southern states in early 2026. The initiative is supported by international partners like WHO and UNICEF.

WHO Warns of ‘Alarming’ Rise in Child Vaping Globally

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning about an "alarming" new wave of nicotine addiction, driven by a surge in children using e-cigarettes. In its first global estimate, the WHO found that more than 100 million people now vape. This includes at least 15 million children between the ages of 13 and 15. Data shows that in countries with available information, children are, on average, nine times more likely to vape than adults. The UN health agency accused the industry of aggressively targeting young people by marketing vapes as less harmful, while actually hooking a new generation on nicotine. This trend risks undermining decades of progress in reducing tobacco use. While the number of global tobacco users has dropped, the WHO urged governments to act faster to implement strong tobacco control policies and protect children from the […]

WHO: Suicide Now Third Leading Cause of Death Among Youth

The World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, has urged governments to take urgent action against noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health challenges, warning that inaction will cost millions of lives and weaken global economies. Speaking in a video message posted on X on Saturday ahead of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Tedros underscored the significance of the upcoming High-Level Meeting on NCDs and Mental Health scheduled for September 25. “Noncommunicable diseases, or NCDs, include seven of the world’s top 10 causes of death, including cancers, heart disease, diabetes, and chronic respiratory disease,” he said. “In addition, more than one billion people face mental health conditions, and suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people.” Enormous human and economic toll Tedros stressed that beyond the personal tragedies, the global burden of NCDs […]

Survey: Nigerians among strongest supporters of global cooperation

Nigerians rank among the world’s top advocates for international cooperation, according to a new global survey by The Rockefeller Foundation. The poll, released ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, found that 71% of Nigerian adults support nations working together to solve shared challenges. This places Nigeria in the top five globally, alongside India (81%), South Korea (73%), and Kenya (72%). South Africa followed closely with 70%. Why Nigerians support cooperation William Asiko, Vice President for Africa at The Rockefeller Foundation, said the findings reflect Nigeria’s awareness of global interdependence. “Africans want a system of international cooperation that is not only effective but also equitable,” he said. Ndidi Nwuneli, president of the ONE Campaign and a board member at the Foundation, stressed the importance of collective action at a time when trust in global institutions is waning. […]

WHO Deploys Experts as Congo Confirms 16th Ebola Outbreak in Kasai Province

The World Health Organization (WHO) has deployed experts to Kasai province in the Democratic Republic of Congo following confirmation of a new Ebola outbreak. The move comes as health authorities face what they say is the country’s 16th outbreak of the deadly virus. WHO said its teams are working with Congo’s Rapid Response Team to strengthen disease surveillance, improve treatment, and enhance infection prevention measures in health facilities. Supplies, including personal protective equipment, mobile labs, and medicines, are also being delivered. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, confirmed that vaccines will play a central role in containing the outbreak. “We had previously prepositioned 2,000 doses of the Ebola vaccine in Kinshasa, which we are releasing to vaccinate contacts and health workers,” he said. WHO Urges Nigeria to Allocate 20% of Budget to Health

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has called on Nigeria to increase public health spending to at least 20 percent of the national budget to strengthen its healthcare system. The appeal was made by WHO Regional Director, Prof. Mohamed Janabi, on Thursday in Abuja during the National Health Financing Dialogue themed “Reimagining the Future of Health Financing in Nigeria.” Janabi described sustainable healthcare financing as the backbone of resilient health systems, stressing that higher investment would reduce out-of-pocket spending, protect households, and improve access to care through stronger prepayment and pooling mechanisms. “With over 223 million citizens, how Nigeria finances health is critical not just for its people but for Africa’s future. Healthier populations are more productive, more resilient to shocks, and better positioned to drive inclusive growth,” he said. Commending Nigeria’s health reforms, including the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund, the […]

WHO: 400,000 Children Diagnosed with Cancer Annually, Calls for Action to Bridge Survival Gap

As the world observes Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed that nearly 400,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year—equivalent to three children every four minutes. WHO highlighted a troubling disparity in survival rates: while over 80% of children in high-income countries survive cancer, only about 20% in low- and middle-income nations live beyond the disease. The organisation described this as “one of the most significant inequalities across cancer types.” The issue was underscored during a national childhood cancer stakeholder workshop in Egypt, where survivors shared their personal journeys. One survivor reflected: “Cancer tried to break me, but the support of my doctors, family, and friends gave me strength. Today, I live to tell my story.” Another added: “The bonds I formed with other children battling cancer gave me hope on the darkest days.” Egypt’s Minister […]
