Refereeing v Atletico ‘a robbery’ – Barca’s Raphinha

Barcelona forward Raphinha has branded the refereeing in their Champions League quarter-final defeat to Atletico Madrid “a robbery.” Barca exited 3–2 on aggregate despite a 2–1 win in Tuesday’s second leg, having lost the first leg 2–0 at home. In both matches a Barcelona defender was sent off after a yellow card was upgraded to red when the referee, on VAR advice, reviewed a potential denial of a goalscoring opportunity on the pitchside monitor. Pau Cubarsi was dismissed by Istvan Kovacs in the first leg, while fellow defender Eric Garcia was sent off by French referee Clement Turpin in the second. Kovacs and video assistant referee Christian Dingert were also criticised by Barcelona after they allowed play to continue when Atletico defender Marc Pubill handled the ball in his own penalty area from what appeared to be a goal-kick situation. UEFA reject Barca handball complaint before Atletico return

UEFA has rejected Barcelona’s complaint over a controversial handball incident in their Champions League quarter‑final first leg defeat to Atletico Madrid, just hours before the return leg. Atletico won the first game 2–0 at Camp Nou, but Barcelona were furious that no penalty was awarded when defender Marc Pubill appeared to handle the ball after receiving what looked like a goal kick inside the area. “After the first leg, Barcelona filed a protest relating to a referee decision. On 13 April 2026, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body declared the protest to be inadmissible,” UEFA said in a statement. The Catalan club had described the decision not to give a spot kick as a “major error” that affected the outcome of the match and criticised the fact that Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs was not asked by VAR to review […]

AFCON To Expand To 28 Teams As CAF Unveils New Reforms

The Africa Cup of Nations is set to be expanded from 24 to 28 teams as part of major reforms announced by the Confederation of African Football. CAF president Patrice Motsepe confirmed the decision after an executive committee meeting in Cairo. Motsepe said the expansion aims to increase participation and competitiveness across the continent. He noted that more countries will now have a realistic chance of reaching the finals, giving fans and players in smaller nations a bigger stake in the tournament. The CAF president linked the changes to a broader restructuring of African football. Alongside the AFCON expansion, CAF plans to launch an African Nations League and adjust the international calendar to give national teams more meaningful games. Motsepe also promised regulation changes to rebuild trust in referees, VAR operators and judicial bodies. CAF has been under pressure after […]

Premier League Fans Back Growing Calls To Scrap VAR

More than three quarters of Premier League fans say they want the Video Assistant Referee system scrapped. The finding comes from a new Football Supporters’ Association survey of almost 8,000 fans from all 20 top flight clubs. According to the poll, 76 percent of respondents were against the continued use of VAR. Around 97 percent said VAR has made football less enjoyable, while over 90 percent felt it has not improved the matchday experience. Supporters complained most about three issues. They cited long delays for reviews, doubts over the accuracy and consistency of decisions, and the loss of spontaneous goal celebrations. Thomas Concannon, the FSA’s Premier League network manager, said the results show a clear mood among matchgoing fans. He explained that people feel VAR takes too long, is too forensic, and strips away the emotional high of scoring. The […]

Liverpool boss Slot buoyed by Mac Allister’s return to top form

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says Alexis Mac Allister is rediscovering his best form after the Argentine scored a last gasp winner in their 1 0 victory at Nottingham Forest. Mac Allister struck deep into added time at the City Ground on Sunday, pouncing on a loose ball from close range just minutes after seeing an earlier effort ruled out by VAR. Slot believes the midfielder’s recent performances show he has benefited from a sustained run of games. He said Mac Allister has been getting back to the high level he displayed for Liverpool last season, after an early part of the campaign marked by ups and downs in both his and the team’s form. The Dutch coach also praised the growing consistency across the squad, noting that several players have raised their levels in recent weeks despite a difficult spell […]

Flick says Atletico 4 0 defeat was a lesson for Barca

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said his team were taught a harsh lesson in their 4 0 Copa del Rey semi final first leg defeat to Atletico Madrid. The La Liga leaders conceded four times in a disastrous first half at the Metropolitano and now face a huge task in the return leg. Flick admitted his side failed to function as a unit before the break. He said the distances between players were too big, Barcelona did not press properly and they allowed Atletico to dominate the game. The German coach described the opening 45 minutes as a big lesson that might still be useful later in the season. He said the team improved in the second half and promised they would fight to turn the tie around in the second leg. Barcelona had a goal from Pau Cubarsi ruled out […]

PL officials ‘don’t want’ Man City to win – Rodri

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has launched a scathing attack on Premier League officials, claiming they “don’t want” his team to win the title after a controversial 2–2 draw at Tottenham. City were 2–0 up in north London before the game swung when a goal from Dominic Solanke was allowed to stand, despite the forward appearing to foul defender Marc Guehi before scoring. Solanke later produced a stunning scorpion kick to level the match, leaving City six points behind leaders Arsenal. “I know we won too much and the people don’t want us to win but the referee has to be neutral and for me honestly, it’s not fair,” Rodri told Australian broadcaster Stan Sport. He insisted the incident was “so clear a foul”, saying Solanke “kicked the leg” of Guehi and the ball went in because of the contact. Rodri […]

Mohammed Kudus Suspended for Two Additional Matches After Red Card Incident.

Ghanaian footballer Mohammed Kudus has received a two-game suspension following his red card for violent conduct during a match against Tottenham last month. The incident, which took place in the 82nd minute of a 4-1 loss, saw Kudus involved in a physical altercation with Micky van de Ven, resulting in a melee between the players.
