Insecurity: US to review aid, humanitarian assistance to Nigeria
The United States government is set to review its financial aid and humanitarian assistance to Nigeria amid growing concerns over insecurity and violence in the country. The move follows new proposals in the US Congress that seek to tie parts of American support to clear security and human rights benchmarks. Lawmakers on the US House Appropriations Committee have advanced a State Department funding bill that would place stricter conditions on assistance to Nigeria. Under the proposed framework, up to 50 per cent of certain funds could be withheld until the US Secretary of State certifies that Nigeria is taking “effective steps” to curb violence and protect civilians. The bill also pushes for stronger accountability measures, including investigations and prosecutions of armed groups and security personnel implicated in abuses.
