US lawmakers arrive in Copenhagen to counter Trump’s Greenland threats

A bipartisan delegation of US lawmakers has arrived in Copenhagen to reassure Denmark and Greenland of strong congressional support amid President Donald Trump’s renewed threats to seize the Arctic island. Trump has called Greenland vital to US national security because of its strategic location and mineral wealth and has refused to rule out the possible use of force to acquire it. The 11‑member delegation is led by Democratic Senator Chris Coons and includes Republicans such as Senators Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski, who have publicly pushed back against any military move on Greenland. They plan to meet Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic leaders to deliver a clear message that Congress stands firmly with NATO allies and supports Denmark’s sovereignty over the territory. Their visit follows high‑level talks in Washington between Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Greenland’s Foreign […]

Turkey opposes military operations against Iran

Turkey says it is against any military operation against Iran, warning that foreign intervention would only deepen crises in the country and across the Middle East. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told journalists in Istanbul that Iran’s internal problems must be resolved by Iranians themselves, not imposed from outside. Fidan said Ankara does not want instability in neighbouring Iran, even though it recognises there are serious issues within Iranian society and government. He cautioned that attempts by the United States or Israel to use force would likely worsen tensions and trigger wider regional conflict. The minister noted that the current protests in Iran stem from legitimate grievances, but that they are also being exploited by Iran’s external enemies. He said Turkey’s priority is to encourage dialogue and a negotiated understanding between Washington and Tehran, which he described as crucial for regional […]

US immigration officer shoots Venezuelan man in Minneapolis

A US federal immigration officer has shot and wounded a Venezuelan man during an enforcement operation in north Minneapolis, intensifying tensions in a city already on edge over recent immigration raids. City officials confirmed the shooting and urged residents to remain calm, while again calling on US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to leave the city and the state. According to the Department of Homeland Security, ICE officers tried to stop the man, described as “an illegal alien from Venezuela,” during a targeted traffic operation. Officials say he fled in his vehicle, crashed into another car, then tried to escape on foot before resisting arrest and “violently” attacking an officer. DHS said two other people emerged from a nearby apartment and joined the struggle, allegedly hitting the officer with a snow shovel and broom handle. The officer then fired what DHS […]

US delivers critical military assets to battle terrorists, bandits

Nigeria’s fight against terrorists and bandits has received a major boost with the delivery of critical military assets from the United States. US Africa Command said the equipment was handed over in Abuja to support ongoing security operations against terrorists and other non state armed groups. AFRICOM described the shipment as “critical military supplies” but did not disclose the specific platforms or weapons involved. The command said the delivery underscores the strong security partnership between both countries and is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s frontline capabilities. The new support follows US assisted “precision hits” on ISIS affiliated Islamic State West Africa Province targets in Jabo, Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State on December 24. Those airstrikes, carried out in coordination with the Nigerian military, destroyed a terrorist camp and were conducted at the request of Nigerian authorities. Nigeria’s Chief of […]

Trump says US will take Greenland one way or the other

US President Donald Trump says the United States will take control of Greenland “one way or the other,” warning that Russia or China could move in if Washington does not act. He describes the mineral rich Arctic territory, which is part of Denmark, as vital for US security because of growing Russian and Chinese activity in the region. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump says he prefers to reach a deal with Greenland’s self governing authorities but is ready to consider tougher options if negotiations fail. He argues that countries should “own” key territory rather than rely on leases, and says the United States must be ready to defend Greenland as its own. Trump has repeatedly suggested that if the US does not act, Russia or China will “take over” Greenland, a prospect he calls unacceptable. He also […]

Iran not seeking war but fully prepared, says minister

Iran’s foreign minister says the country does not want war but is fully prepared to fight if necessary. He also says Tehran is open to talks with the United States if negotiations are fair and based on mutual respect. Abbas Araghchi told a gathering of foreign ambassadors in Tehran that Iran is ready for both conflict and diplomacy. He stressed that any talks must give Iran equal rights and must not be dictated by Washington. Araghchi’s comments come as US President Donald Trump signals that Iran’s leadership is seeking negotiations after he warned of possible military action over the crackdown on protests. Washington has also maintained a “maximum pressure” policy aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear programme. The minister repeated that Iran’s nuclear activities are peaceful, even as Western countries and the UN nuclear watchdog say Tehran once ran an organised […]

US–Venezuela oil pact angers China, cools prices

Global oil prices slipped after President Donald Trump confirmed a deal for the United States to import up to 2 billion dollars worth of Venezuelan crude that had been blocked by sanctions. The plan would redirect an estimated 30 to 50 million barrels of stranded Venezuelan oil to US refiners, boosting supply and easing market pressure. China, once Venezuela’s main oil customer, criticised the move as economic coercion and accused Washington of effectively hijacking cargoes previously tied to Chinese interests.Analysts say the shift could undercut Chinese refiners that relied on discounted Venezuelan crude and weaken Beijing’s long standing energy relationship with Caracas. Trump has presented the deal as a win for American motorists and Venezuelans, arguing it will lower fuel costs while putting Caracas’ oil revenues under tighter US control.Uncertainty remains over how long the arrangement will last and how it […]

Russia sends sub to guard tanker pursued by US

Russia has deployed a submarine and other naval vessels to escort an aging oil tanker that US forces have been trying to seize off the coast of Venezuela. The ship, formerly known as Bella 1 and now sailing under a new name, has been tracked for weeks over alleged involvement in sanctions busting and black market oil shipments. According to US officials cited in media reports, the tanker had attempted to approach Venezuela to load oil but was blocked and later pursued in international waters.Washington considers the vessel stateless and subject to boarding because it has sailed under questionable flags while linked to networks moving sanctioned Russian and Venezuelan crude. Moscow’s decision to send a submarine and additional naval assets marks a sharp escalation in the standoff and signals its readiness to physically shield the tanker from US interdiction.Analysts say the […]
