Iran envoy urges global action on Palestinian crisis

Iran’s ambassador has called for urgent, coordinated international action to address what Tehran describes as a deepening humanitarian and political crisis facing the Palestinian people. Speaking against the backdrop of the ongoing Israel–Palestine war and wider strikes in the region, the envoy urged Muslim and non Muslim nations, especially members of the Non Aligned Movement, to speak out more forcefully against Israeli military operations and the blockade on Gaza. He argued that silence or “neutrality” in the face of rising civilian casualties amounts to complicity. The ambassador called on the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly to move beyond statements and adopt “urgent, collective measures” to halt attacks on civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, ensure accountability for alleged war crimes and guarantee the delivery of humanitarian aid. He also pressed for sustained funding for UNRWA and other […]

Iran war: Falana urges Nigeria to work with other countries to pressure Trump

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has called on Nigeria to collaborate with other countries to mount diplomatic pressure on United States President Donald Trump over the ongoing war involving Iran, Israel and the US. Falana said Nigeria should revive its tradition of multilateral diplomacy, like in the days of the Non Aligned Movement, by working with other nations to ensure respect for international law and to push for restraint on all sides. He criticised Trump for what he described as contempt for international law and United Nations resolutions, noting that the US under his watch has withdrawn from dozens of UN decisions. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria argued that Nigeria and other countries must persuade global powers such as China and Russia to intervene diplomatically in the crisis, since they wield significant influence over […]

Europe welcomes Rubio’s tone but vows to stay more independent

European leaders have broadly welcomed the tone of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s speech on transatlantic ties at the Munich Security Conference, but many say it will not change their push for a more autonomous Europe. In his keynote address, Rubio described the United States as the “offspring of Europe” and called for unity with allies while also criticising them on issues such as defence spending and global governance. A senior French minister said Rubio’s recognition of shared history and common values was positive, but stressed that Europe would still pursue a stronger and more independent role in security and foreign policy. He noted that European countries have heard similar messages from past US administrations and that their long term goal remains to build a resilient, self reliant Europe inside a strong NATO. Another European foreign minister said Rubio’s […]

Poland Italy refuse to join Trump’s Board of Peace

Poland and Italy have said they will not join US President Donald Trump’s new Board of Peace under its current terms, adding to the list of Washington allies staying away from the initiative. The body was launched to support a Gaza ceasefire but is expected to take on a wider role in resolving global conflicts, raising concerns it could rival the United Nations. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told a government meeting that national doubts over the board’s design meant Warsaw would not participate for now. He said Poland would continue to analyse the proposal and stressed that relations with the United States remain a priority, adding that Warsaw does not rule out joining if circumstances change. Tusk noted that Russia and Belarus had been invited to the Board of Peace, a factor that has made many Western countries cautious. North Korea says shameless US is making a mockery of UN

North Korea has accused the United States of abusing the United Nations and trying to turn it into a tool for its own interests. Pyongyang called US actions “shameless” and said Washington was making a mockery of the UN through its behaviour. In a statement from its mission to the UN in New York, North Korea condemned reported US plans to hold a briefing on alleged North Korean violations of UN sanctions. It said the real issue the UN should focus on is what it described as a “hideous criminal act” by the United States, without giving details. Pyongyang said the US “despises the existence of the UN itself” and uses the organisation only when it serves its strategic goals. It warned that Washington’s “irrationality and malpractice” in using the UN arena for unilateral and selfish purposes should not be […]

Trump pulls US out of dozens of global organisations

US President Donald Trump has ordered the United States to withdraw from dozens of international organisations, including many focused on climate change and global governance. The decision affects 66 entities, nearly half of which are affiliated with the United Nations. Among those impacted is the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the treaty that forms the foundation of international cooperation to address global warming. The White House said the withdrawals were justified on the grounds that these organisations no longer align with US interests and support agendas considered ineffective or hostile. According to an official statement, the move follows a review that concluded continued participation amounted to a misuse of public funds. The administration said the decision would end US financial contributions and involvement in bodies it believes prioritise global initiatives over national priorities. It further accused several organisations of […]

Venezuela slams Trump’s ‘total blockade’ threat

Venezuela has condemned US President Donald Trump’s order for a “total and complete” blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers heading to the country, calling it a “warmongering” threat and a grave danger to peace in South America. The move is part of Washington’s effort to increase pressure on President Nicolas Maduro’s government. The escalation follows the recent seizure of an oil tanker off Venezuela’s coast and a significant build-up of US military forces in the region. In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused Venezuela of using oil revenue to fund drug trafficking and other crimes and vowed to expand the military presence until Caracas hands over oil, land and other assets he claims were “stolen” from the United States. Trump wrote that Venezuela is “completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled in the History of South America” and […]

US Says Rwanda Breaching Congo Peace Deal With Support For M23 Rebels

The United States has accused Rwanda of breaching a newly agreed peace deal aimed at ending hostilities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo by continuing to support the M23 rebel movement. The accusation comes only days after Washington announced it had helped broker an accord between Kinshasa and Kigali to reduce tensions. US and UN officials say M23 has launched fresh attacks in parts of eastern Congo with backing from Rwandan forces. Reports indicate that Rwandan troops, weapons and logistical support have enabled the rebels to gain ground in mineral rich areas of South Kivu and neighbouring provinces. International and regional sources cited in media reports say more than 400 people have been killed since the latest escalation began, including civilians and combatants on both sides. An estimated 200,000 people have been newly displaced by the violence, adding to millions […]

Tanzania’s Hassan Wins Landslide Amid Deadly Post-Election Protests

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has won a landslide re-election, securing 97.66 percent of the vote, according to official results released on Saturday. However, the victory has been overshadowed by days of deadly protests and allegations of a violent government crackdown. The Tanzania Electoral Commission announced the result on state television, stating that Hassan dominated every constituency. A swift swearing-in ceremony was scheduled for later on Saturday, the broadcaster added. The main opposition party, Chadema, was barred from participating in the election after its leader was charged with treason. The party accused security forces of killing hundreds of protesters since demonstrations erupted on election day, Wednesday, across major cities including Dar es Salaam and Arusha. Chadema’s spokesman told AFP that around 700 people had been killed, citing figures collected from hospitals and clinics. A security source and a Western diplomat […]
