Democracy survives as FG explains failed Benin coup
The Federal Government has described how democracy in Benin Republic survived an attempted coup, explaining that swift regional and international actions helped foil the plot. Officials said the coup attempt was quickly contained, allowing President Patrice Talon’s government to remain in control. According to the government’s account, loyal security forces moved fast to block the mutineers from seizing key state institutions. Diplomatic pressure from neighbouring countries and regional bodies also discouraged wider support for the takeover.
