According to the US Geological Survey, the tremor occurred at a depth of 28 kilometres, with the epicentre located near Mazar-i-Sharif in Balkh province. Health ministry spokesman Sharafat Zaman said, “Based on the information we have so far, 534 people have been injured and more than 20 fatalities have been taken to hospitals in Samangan and Balkh provinces.” In Mazar-i-Sharif, residents fled their homes in panic as buildings shook. United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, has invited American rapper Nicki Minaj to visit the U.S. Embassy to the UN in New York after she publicly backed former President Donald Trump’s remarks on Nigeria’s religious situation. Tanzania protests erupt after disputed election as police clash with demonstrators in Dar es Salaam

Hundreds of demonstrators clashed with police in Tanzania’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, for a third consecutive day on Friday, demanding that the national electoral commission halt the release of election results after a chaotic and contested vote. The protests erupted amid a government crackdown that has included military deployment and a near-total internet shutdown. On Thursday, security forces fired tear gas and live ammunition at protesters in the Mbagala, Gongo la Mboto, and Kiluvya neighbourhoods as residents defied a government-imposed curfew. According to reports, several vehicles, police posts, and even a petrol station were set ablaze as anger boiled over. Amnesty International said at least two people have been killed since the demonstrations began earlier in the week. The violence broke out following Wednesday’s general election, which many Tanzanians and rights groups have condemned as unfair and restrictive. President […]

Over 60 Nations Sign UN Cybercrime Treaty Amid Rights Concerns

More than 60 countries have signed a new United Nations treaty to combat cybercrime, creating the first global framework for international cooperation on digital offenses. The signing ceremony took place in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Saturday. The treaty aims to help nations work together to fight crimes like online scams, child sexual abuse material, and digital money laundering. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the signing an "important milestone" in addressing crimes that "drain billions of dollars from our economy." However, the treaty faces strong opposition from human rights groups and major technology companies. Critics warn that its broad definitions of cybercrime could be misused by governments to increase surveillance, suppress dissent, and target journalists and political opponents. The treaty, first proposed by Russia in 2017, was approved by the UN last year after lengthy negotiations. While it includes some human rights […]

Iran Declares End to Nuclear Deal Restrictions

Iran announced on Saturday that it is no longer bound by restrictions on its nuclear programme, marking the official expiration of a landmark 10-year deal with world powers. Despite the move, Tehran reaffirmed its “commitment to diplomacy.” The 2015 nuclear accord, signed in Vienna by Iran, the United States, China, Russia, France, Britain, and Germany, had lifted international sanctions in exchange for limits on Iran’s nuclear activities. However, the agreement began to unravel after the United States withdrew under President Donald Trump in 2018, prompting Iran to roll back its commitments. The United Nations reinstated sanctions last month at the request of Britain, France, and Germany, effectively ending the deal. In a statement, Iran’s foreign ministry said, “All provisions of the deal, including restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme and related mechanisms, are now terminated.” It added that Iran remains committed […]

Madagascar Soldiers Urge Army to Defy Orders Against Protesters

A group of soldiers from a military base near Madagascar’s capital, Antananarivo, has called on fellow troops and security forces to reject any orders to shoot at protesters. The message, shared in a video on Saturday morning, came as thousands of demonstrators marched in the city. “Let us unite — soldiers, gendarmes, and police — and refuse to be paid to shoot our friends, our brothers, and our sisters,” the soldiers from the Soanierana base said in the video. They urged colleagues across the country to “refuse orders to shoot” and “close the gates” of their camps until further notice. The soldiers also warned others not to follow commands from superiors who might order violence against protesters, adding, “Those who give such orders will not care for our families if we die.” It remains unclear how many soldiers have joined […]

Venezuela’s Maduro Threatens State of Emergency Over US ‘Aggression’

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro warned on Monday that he is prepared to declare a state of emergency in response to what he called escalating US military aggression. His comments follow a string of deadly American strikes on suspected Venezuelan drug boats in the Caribbean. “Today the consultation process began…to declare a state of emergency in accordance with the constitution and protect our people, our peace, and our stability if Venezuela were attacked by the American empire, attacked militarily,” Maduro said in a televised address. Earlier, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez told foreign diplomats that Maduro had already signed a decree granting him special powers in defense and security should the US move against Venezuela. But a government source later clarified that the president had not yet formally signed the document, though it was ready for enactment at any time. The tensions […]

Israeli Strike in Qatar Threatens Gaza Ceasefire Talks — UN

The United Nations has warned that Israel’s strike in Doha, Qatar, has opened a dangerous new chapter in the Gaza conflict, with serious implications for regional stability and ongoing ceasefire negotiations. Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, told the Security Council on Thursday that the world was “shocked” by the attack, which reportedly targeted individuals gathered to discuss the latest U.S.-backed proposal for a ceasefire and hostage release deal in Gaza. “The sovereignty and territorial integrity of any country, including Qatar — a valued partner in advancing peacemaking and conflict resolution — must be respected,” DiCarlo said. She stressed that Qatar, alongside Egypt and the United States, had been playing a pivotal role in brokering a truce, adding: “We are deeply grateful for Qatar’s steadfast commitment and constructive diplomacy. All parties must act to preserve these efforts.” […]
