Nigeria’s data protection model now draws Africa’s interest

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission says reforms launched since 2023 have turned the country into a reference point for data protection and privacy in Africa. Officials credit President Bola Tinubu’s prompt assent to the 2023 Data Protection Act and early policy direction from NDPC chief executive Vincent Olatunji for strengthening the ecosystem. The commission said the law created clear regulatory and supervisory powers, opened new opportunities in the data economy and placed stronger obligations on organisations handling personal data. Banks, schools, hospitals, insurers, telecoms firms and online platforms have been put under stricter oversight, with some sanctioned for data breaches. According to the NDPC, Nigeria’s consistent enforcement and regulatory clarity have attracted attention from across the continent. In the last two years, data regulators from at least eight African countries have visited to study the Nigerian framework with a view […]

Gambia Baby Dies After Illegal Female Genital Mutilation

Banjul, The Gambia – A one-month-old girl has died from injuries linked to female genital mutilation (FGM) in The Gambia, sparking outrage and renewed calls for stronger enforcement of the country’s decade-old ban on the practice. Authorities later confirmed that she had bled to death from injuries caused by FGM. The case has shaken the community of Wellingara, about 17 kilometres from the capital, where the baby’s family lives. Police arrested at least three women, including the woman who performed the procedure and the baby’s mother. “She is the unlucky one,” said a grieving neighbour, who attended the child’s naming ceremony a week after her birth. The neighbour, who asked not to be […]

The Federal Government is preparing to commercialise the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (NTAC) volunteer programme, according to the agency’s Director-General, Dr. Yusuf Yakub. Yakub disclosed this on Friday in Abuja during the deployment exercise of 20 Technical Aid Corps (TAC) volunteers, made up of doctors and nurses, to The Gambia. He explained that commercialising the scheme will not only help partner nations fill professional gaps but also address Nigeria’s unemployment challenges by engaging young experts who are currently underutilised. “We have an abundance of unemployed youths in Nigeria and several skilled professionals who are not fully engaged, while the world is in need of experts to fill gaps,” Yakub said. He noted that the performance of Nigerian volunteers in the past had earned the programme international credibility, citing Jamaica’s recent request for 400 Nigerian professionals as an example of growing […]
