1 in 10 Girls Had Sex Before 15 – GSS Report.

A recent report from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), based on the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey, has revealed that one in every ten adolescent girls (10-19 years) engaged in sexual activity before the age of 15. This accounts for 10.2% of the adolescent population, which makes up 22% of Ghana’s total population. Despite a slight decline from 12% in 1993, the progress over 29 years remains minimal.The report, titled “Adolescent Risky Behaviour,” also highlighted that 15.2% of teenage girls had experienced pregnancy, 4% had pregnancy losses, and 10.9% had become mothers. Alarmingly, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among female adolescents aged 15-19 rose from 2.2% in 2003 to 7.1% in 2022. Bongo Queen Mothers Call for United Efforts Against Teenage Pregnancy.

The Bongo Queen Mothers Association has urged stakeholders, including government agencies, traditional authorities, and religious leaders, to intensify collaborative efforts to address the rising rates of teenage pregnancy and early marriage in the district.Speaking at their 5th Anniversary Celebration, the association expressed concern about the increasing trend of young girls leaving school due to early pregnancies and marriages, despite past interventions.The Queen Mother of Bongo-Feo, Pognaba Agamboka Noyansonga-Kaisikoma, highlighted progress made between 2020 and 2022, where Bongo dropped from first to 11th position in teenage pregnancy cases among the 15 districts in the region. Over 4,000 Teenage Pregnancies Reported in Oti Region; Okada Riders Join Fight.

In response to a troubling surge of over 4,000 teenage pregnancies in the Oti Region from 2023 to August 2024, the Oti Regional Co-ordinating Council, in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Social Welfare Department, and UNFPA, has called on okada riders in Krachi East to help tackle the issue.During a workshop in Dambai, Juliet Akorfa Akorlie, Adolescent Focal Person, urged the riders to engage teens in conversations about sexual health and promote responsible behavior. The growing trend of teenage pregnancies threatens the health, education, and future economic potential of these young girls.Okada riders responded positively, committing to using their community influence to guide and educate the youth on avoiding risky behavior and accessing available support services like counseling and health clinics.
