Barcelona add Osimhen to striker shortlist

Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has been listed among Barcelona’s key options as the Spanish giants search for a long term replacement for Robert Lewandowski. Reports in Europe say Barca’s recruitment team has drawn up a shortlist of centre forwards, with Osimhen viewed as one of the realistic targets for the summer window. Barcelona are planning for life after Lewandowski, whose role in the team is gradually being reduced as he nears the end of his contract. The club is said to be studying several profiles, but Osimhen and a few other forwards stand out because of their proven goal scoring records and age profile. According to reports, Osimhen is not currently at the very top of Barca’s list, but he is seen as a serious alternative if primary targets cannot be signed. However, any move for the Nigerian will be […]

World Cup play off: Super Eagles’ hopes fade as FIFA confirms DRC spot

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup have suffered a final blow after world football body FIFA confirmed DR Congo as Africa’s representative in the inter confederation play off tournament. In a tournament accreditation notice and subsequent communications, FIFA listed DR Congo among the six teams that will compete in the play off, leaving no space for the Super Eagles, who had challenged their defeat to the Congolese side. Nigeria lost to DR Congo in the intercontinental play off final in Rabat, with the match ending 1–1 in regulation time before the Leopards won 4–3 on penalties to claim Africa’s last slot. The Nigeria Football Federation later petitioned FIFA, alleging that some DR Congo players were ineligible and that competition rules had been breached, but FIFA ruled that all the players were properly registered and cleared to play. Obasogie denies match fixing claims after three month suspension

Super Eagles goalkeeper Amas Obasogie has firmly denied allegations of match fixing after his Tanzanian club, Singida Black Stars, handed him a three month suspension. The club announced that he was suspended pending investigation into suspected match manipulation in two games, including a CAF Confederation Cup tie against Flambeau du Centre and a league match against Namungo FC. In a personal statement, Obasogie insisted he had never engaged in match fixing and would never do so, describing the incidents under review as normal football errors, not deliberate acts. He explained that the costly late goal conceded against Namungo, where he spilled a routine free kick and allowed an equaliser, was a genuine mistake that can happen to any goalkeeper. Obasogie apologised to Singida’s management, coaches, teammates and supporters for the disappointment caused by his performances and said he is committed […]

Osimhen scores 10th Super Lig goal in Galatasaray win

Victor Osimhen has scored his 10th league goal of the season in the Turkish Super Lig, helping Galatasaray to a 3–1 home victory over Alanyaspor. The Super Eagles striker also provided an assist in the game, as the Turkish champions extended their lead at the top of the table. Galatasaray took the lead just before half time, but Alanyaspor equalised early in the second half, forcing the hosts to raise their tempo. Osimhen was involved in the move that restored Galatasaray’s advantage, with his attempted bicycle kick leading to a loose ball that teammate Lucas Torreira fired into the net. He then sealed the win late in the game by capitalising on a mistake from the Alanyaspor goalkeeper, rounding him before finishing calmly into an empty net. The result moved Galatasaray further clear of title rivals Fenerbahce and underlined Osimhen’s […]

Europe Watch: Ndidi scores on return, Iwobi shines as Galatasaray miss Osimhen’s spark

Ndidi, returning to the starting XI after weeks on the sidelines, got on the scoresheet for his club and showed his usual energy and defensive discipline in midfield, a timely boost ahead of Nigeria’s next international window. Iwobi continued his fine form by creating chances, working tirelessly off the ball and underlining why he remains one of the Super Eagles’ most consistent Europe based players. Over in Turkey, Galatasaray’s attack again lacked cutting edge without Osimhen leading the line, with the team failing to turn possession into goals. The Nigerian forward, who recently returned to training after a muscle injury, is still working his way back to full fitness and his absence has been felt in Gala’s recent league games. Despite the mixed fortunes at club level, the overall form of key Nigerians like Ndidi, Iwobi and Osimhen continues to […]

DR Congo eligibility row: FIFA silence keeps Super Eagles’ World Cup hopes in suspense

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup through a petition against DR Congo remain in limbo as FIFA continues to delay a verdict on the eligibility case. The Nigeria Football Federation is challenging DR Congo’s use of several players in last November’s African playoff final, which the Super Eagles lost on penalties. The NFF alleges that some DR Congo stars held dual citizenship and did not fully comply with both Congolese law and FIFA’s nationality switch rules before playing in the tie. Officials argue that the Congolese federation misled FIFA during player clearance, and are pushing for DR Congo’s disqualification and Nigeria’s reinstatement into the intercontinental playoff in Mexico. Reports earlier suggested that FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee would announce its decision in February, giving clarity before the March 26–31 play‑off window. However, as at mid February, Nigerian officials say they […]

Osimhen: Napoli treated me like a dog, I had to leave

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has claimed he was treated “like a dog” by Napoli in the final months before his move to Turkish giants Galatasaray. He said the Italian club broke a gentleman’s agreement that would have allowed him to leave after signing a contract extension in 2023. Osimhen explained that when he renewed his deal in December 2023, there was a clear understanding that he would be free to depart the following summer if a good offer arrived. Instead, he alleged, Napoli tried to send him “everywhere” without respecting his wishes or the prior commitment. “They tried to send me to play everywhere, treating me like a dog. Go here, go there, do this, do that,” he said in an interview with Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport. “I worked so hard to build my career; I couldn’t accept […]
