ECOWAS Leaders Reaffirm Vow To Defend Democracy Amid Coups

Heads of state and government of the Economic Community of West African States have pledged to stand firm against unconstitutional changes of government and protect democracy across the sub region. Meeting against the backdrop of recent coup attempts, they stressed that military takeovers remain unacceptable under ECOWAS protocols.​ Leaders used the occasion to restate their “zero tolerance” stance on coups, warning that sanctions, diplomatic pressure and, where necessary, regional security measures will be considered to deter would be putschists.
