Sokoto, UNICEF step up action on out-of-school children

The Sokoto State Universal Basic Education Board has stepped up efforts to reduce the high number of out-of-school children through expanded early childhood education and major reforms, according to its Executive Chairman, Umar Tambuwal. Speaking at a media dialogue on educational reform for Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara, Tambuwal said education is central to the state’s future and that early childhood investment is key to reversing poor learning outcomes. He explained that the years from birth to eight are critical for brain development, cognitive growth and emotional stability, especially for disadvantaged children. Tambuwal warned that lack of early learning opportunities increases the risk of school dropouts and fuels the rise in out-of-school children. He said that with UNICEF support, the board assisted 160 Early Childhood Care and Education centres in 2024 and 2025 with teaching materials and caregiver training, while UNICEF […]

Turji Alleges Two Ex Governors Are Fuelling Insecurity

Notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has claimed in a viral video that two former governors from Zamfara and Sokoto states bear major responsibility for the insecurity ravaging parts of northern Nigeria. He accused the past administrations of laying the groundwork for today’s violence through decisions he said worsened tensions and communal distrust. Turji alleged that the former leaders armed local vigilante groups, popularly called Yan Banga, in ways that he claims targeted Fulani communities and escalated reprisals. According to him, those policies turned what should have been community protection initiatives into forces that deepened ethnic and social divisions. In the same video, Turji addressed controversy over his past contacts with the Zamfara State government when Bello Matawalle, now Minister of State for Defence, was governor. He admitted taking part in peace talks with the then administration but denied receiving a […]

Coalition faults push for Sharia law, cites breach of 1999 constitution

A coalition of civil rights and faith-based organisations has condemned renewed efforts to expand the implementation of Sharia law in Nigeria, describing it as a violation of the 1999 Constitution and a threat to national unity and human rights. The coalition, operating under the banner End Sharia Now, includes groups such as One Nation One Law, Global Network of Christian Faith and Truth, and Love a Muslim Ministry. In a statement signed by Benson Sunday on Wednesday, the coalition said attempts to institutionalise Sharia beyond personal faith practices contradict the Constitution’s secular foundation. Responding to comments from some Islamic scholars who argued that there was “no justification for opposing Sharia in Nigeria,” the coalition cited sections 10 and 42 of the 1999 Constitution, which prohibit the adoption of any state religion and guarantee equality of all citizens regardless of faith.
