Waje urges male influencers to promote safer online culture
Award winning Nigerian singer and humanitarian Waje has used the 6th Nigerian Governors’ Spouses Forum Conference in Abuja to call for a safer and more responsible online culture, especially from male influencers and content creators. The high level conference brought together governors’ wives, policymakers, development partners and social advocates to discuss women’s empowerment, healthcare, education, youth development and social welfare. Speaking on the role of societal influencers in shaping culture, Waje said that beyond policies and programmes, the everyday attitudes people display online and offline play a major role in determining the kind of society that emerges. She noted that male influencers often underestimate their impact, stressing that what they normalise through jokes, language and the behaviour they tolerate in their comment sections can either reinforce harm or promote respect, and that silence can sometimes be read as endorsement.
