Singapore Names Orchid Hybrid After President John Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has been honoured in Singapore with an orchid hybrid named after him. The ceremony took place at the National Orchid Garden in Singapore’s Botanic Gardens, where the flower—now officially called Vanda John Dramani Mahama—was unveiled. The orchid joins Singapore’s renowned VIP Orchids collection, which features hybrids named after visiting dignitaries, including world leaders and heads of state. As part of the event, President Mahama toured the gardens, signed the visitors’ book, and was briefed on the institution’s history. Singapore’s tradition of dedicating orchid hybrids to distinguished guests is regarded as a gesture of goodwill and respect. Beyond their elegance, orchids in Singapore symbolize resilience and transformation—qualities the nation associates with its own development journey. President Mahama is currently in Singapore on a three-day state visit, which also includes his participation in the 8th Africa–Singapore Business Forum.
