Tinubu honours Omatseye, Otitoju, Alake, 47 others for June 12 democracy struggle
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred national honours on 50 Nigerians, including top journalists, activists and politicians, in recognition of their roles in the June 12 pro-democracy struggle and the nation’s democratic journey. The honourees include veteran columnist Sam Omatseye, broadcaster and journalist Babajide Otitoju and presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who were recognised alongside former Lagos commissioner Dele Alake and other leading voices of the democracy movement. The awards, announced as part of the 2025 Democracy Day activities, are a continuation of Tinubu’s broader recognition of June 12 heroes, both living and posthumous, who fought military rule and advocated for democratic governance in Nigeria.
